* UK - Analysis: Rising inventory costs to provide impetus for 'solutions' providers
UK -Transport Intelligence (UK) -8 August 2006: -- The contract logistics sector, which in the past few years has been eclipsed by the stellar growth of freight forwarding, could be coming back into its own. In the late 1990s the sector was very much regarded by analysts as a key growth market whilst freight forwarding was perceived as a rather dull, low value add activity. One of the primary reasons for this was the role that ‘high end’ logistics companies could play in reducing clients’ inventory levels. At a time when interest rates, and consequently inventory carrying costs, were high, this was a powerful argument... However following the end of the ‘dotcom’ boom and the economic slump endured by global markets, interest rates fell. This reduced pressure on manufactuers and retailers to focus on stock levels, even though the best in class continued to do so...
