Coast to Coast - Costa Rica - Incofer seek to reactivate railways
San José,Costa Rica -La Nación /BNamericas (Santiago,Chile), by Eva Medalla -June 1, 2006: -- Costa Rica's government and state railroad administrator Incofer are seeking ways to rehabilitate the country's railway system on both its Pacific and Caribbean coasts... Incofer officials have met on a number of occasions with President Óscar Arias Sánchez to discuss ways to finance the rehabilitation of the railway systems and have considered concessions as a possibility... The debate is still over whether funding should come from the public or private sector, or even from a combination of both... Authorities wish to reactivate both the passenger and cargo railway systems, he said. Costs of rehabilitating the 325km system have also been discussed... The nation's rail system halted operations in 1996... Now private operators have expressed interest since the opening of capital San José's metropolitan train last year... The railway could facilitate the transport of produce to ports Limón and Caldera. Currently products are transported on cargo trucks...
