Do you know this? - Canada - Trucking is the key link in getting goods to your table

"If you got it, a truck brought it"

Moncton,New Brunswick,Canada -Times & Transcript (subscription) -May 31, 2006: -- Ever wonder about how that new book or appliance you ordered over the Internet got to your door?... What about the fresh tomato you just chopped up for your salad?... Or the juicy Florida orange that just days ago was still growing in a grove under the south Florida sun?... Whether it's groceries from the supermarket, tires for your car, or moving just-in-time parts and supplies to assembly lines and factories across the country, trucks keep Canada moving... Trucking in Canada is a $54.7 billion industry that employs more than 260,000 drivers and somewhere in the order of 400,000 Canadians overall. The trucking Industry is considered the largest employer in the country... Trucks move 90 per cent of all consumer products and foodstuffs within Canada and almost two thirds, by value, of our trade with the United States, our largest trading partner... Without trucking, the wheels of commerce would stop rolling and Canadians would be unable to enjoy many of their favourite consumer products... Then 1,388 litres of fuel later, a $1,457.40 cost to the trucking company, the produce arrives at the grocery chain's warehouse in the Maritimes. From there the load is divided up into smaller loads for individual stores before being loaded back onto a local delivery truck and taken by a different truck driver, to your neighbourhood grocery store. This is referred to as just in time delivery... From the orange grove to your dinner table in a matter of just over 80 hours, thanks to the trucking industry...
