* Big Three closer to rivals in efficiency

Hoffman-2 Jun 2006: -- Aggressive efforts to improve factory efficiency are paying off for Detroit automakers as they continued to narrow the productivity gap with their Asian rivals last year, according to an annual study released Thursday... The Harbour Report North America 2006 found that 7.33 labor hours per vehicle separated the best performing Japanese automaker in North America from the worst performing U.S. automaker, down from 9.08 hours in 2004 and less than half the cavernous 16.56-hour gap that existed in 1998... While Japan's Nissan Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. still are the most productive automakers in North America, Toyota and Honda saw their factory efficiency drop last year...
