* New GM hybrid, new shot at jobs
Baltimore,Mar,USA -Baltimore Sun, by Paul Adams & Jamie Smith Hopkins -Feb 2, 2006: General Motors Corp. said yesterday that it will build the industry's first hybrid light-truck transmission at its manufacturing plant in northeastern Baltimore County, offering fresh hope to some of the 500 autoworkers still looking for jobs after the world's largest automaker closed its aged van assembly factory in Southeast Baltimore last May...

* Domestics Pose Sales Surprise in Jan.
USA -The Car Connection -Feb. 2, 2006: Hard-pressed General Motors and Ford Motor Co. surprised analysts and posted sales increases in January, halting a four-month-long string of sales declines that had cost both companies market share and had magnified other corporate difficulties... Strong fleet sales last month, however, helped overcome softness on the retail side during January, GM and Ford officials said. Future prospects for both companies were clouded, however, by a decline in truck sales that suggested consumers are still looking for alternatives to traditional sport-utility vehicles...

* Delphi Lost $1.13B in December
USA -The Detroit News -Feb. 2, 2006: Losses at Delphi Corp. in December ballooned to $1.13 billion as the company continues to battle with its unions to cut costs... reports that the supplier reported the figures as a requirement of its filing with the federal bankruptcy courts... Some 58 percent of the supplier's business came from General Motors, which is locked in negotiations with Delphi and the United Auto Workers over job and pension cuts at the supplier, for which GM may take some financial responsibility...

* Canadian auto sales surge ahead in January
TORONTO,Ont,CAN -Reuters -2 Feb 2006: DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors showed strong monthly sales growth in Canada, leaving behind their Japanese rivals, according to January figures released by the companies on Wednesday...

* Toyota considering China R&D facility
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -2 Feb 2006: Toyota Motor Corp. said on Thursday it is considering setting up a facility in China to research and develop a car for the local market...

* Nissan has surprise third quarter gain on Europe, China sales
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -Feb 2, 2006: Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., Japan's second-biggest automaker, posted a surprise rise in quarterly profit on better-than-expected vehicle sales and a weaker yen, and reiterated its forecast for a small gain in full-year profit... Nissan, 44 percent-owned by Renault SA and valued at more than $50 billion, had struggled against shrinking demand in major regions after it raced to meet a pledge to sell 3.6 million vehicles globally in the 12 months to last September...

* Russia's Avtovaz to build plant, review GM venture
TOLYATTI, Russia -Reuters -Feb 2, 2006: Russian automaker AvtoVaz will build a new state-funded car plant and may close a joint venture with General Motors, it said on Thursday... The major strategy shift comes as Russia seeks to create an auto industry champion to meet the challenge of foreign competitors whose sales of imported and locally-assembled cars are booming...

* Fuji Heavy raises profit forecast
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -Feb 3, 2006- Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the maker of Subaru cars, posted an 84 percent jump in quarterly operating profit on Friday thanks to big cost cuts and a weaker yen, and lifted its full-year forecast despite sputtering sales in its key U.S. market...

* Mitsubishi Motors says it is on track for smaller loss
KUALA LUMPUR,Malaysia -Reuters -Feb 3, 2006: Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is on track to meet its own forecast for a net loss of $540.4 million (64 billion yen) in the current financial year, President Osamu Masuko said on Friday... He was speaking after unveiling an alliance with Malaysian state-controlled carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd, which is also striving to recover from losses...

* Iran prepares for Mercedes mass production
TEHRAN,Iran -Mehr News Agency -Feb. 3 2006: Following the pilot production of 60 Mercedes Benz automobiles in Iran, commercial production of the passenger cars is planned to start early next year (Iranian year starts March 21)... In addition, Iranian officials are currently negotiating with the German side over the manufacturing in Iran of different models of Mercedes trucks and buses next year. The decision will be made based on the market and the political conditions as well as the possible presence in Iran of the Chinese trucks, the report further explained...
