Ford News - USA - To close 7 assembly plants, cut up to 30,000 jobs

DETROIT,Mich,USA -The AutoNews, by Dale Jewett -23 Jan 2006: -- Ford Motor Co. said Monday that it would close assembly plants in St. Louis, Atlanta and Wixom, Mich., as part of a sweeping restructuring plan... The automaker also is closing a transmission plant in Batavia, Ohio, and a casting plant in Windsor, Ontario... It also will close two additional assembly plants, which will be named later... In total, Ford will close 14 manufacturing plants by 2012 -- seven of them vehicle assembly plants. The closings will cut Ford's assembly capacity by 1.2 million units, or 26 percent, by 2008, the automaker said... The moves will cut North American jobs by 25,000 to 30,000 positions by 2012, the automaker said. The plant closings and job cuts are part of the Way Forward plan, designed to help Ford stabilize its North American market share... Work on the various speeches given on Monday continued almost to the moment before senior Ford managers, led by CEO Bill Ford, took to the stage. That reflected, in part, an ongoing debate over just how much information to reveal to the world. In the end, a number of key details were omitted, in part for the sake of time, in part to maintain certain proprietary decisions... But "a lot will be coming out over the coming weeks and months," confided one high-level source, immediately after the announcement was completed. Others confirmed that comment... Ford officials will soon reveal plans to also close one of their Mexican assembly lines, and another in St. Paul, Minn... Look for Ford to build its Fairlane "people-mover," an interesting alternative to the traditional minivan. It will also bring over a version of the European Ford Focus, a much more modern and well-equipped vehicle than the American subcompact sharing that name. Even more new products will start appearing in the months to come...
