I’ve certainly cursed my share of 18-wheelers as they barrel through the left lane at speeds more suited for a NASCAR racer. And I’ve cursed the clueless sedan-jockeys who cut in front of truckers with no understanding of how Newton’s laws of motion could affect their personal safety... Today, we have a story about truckers and the law enforcement officials who watch them — commercial vehicle enforcement officers. They’re the ones who watch for overweight trucks, or truckers who have been driving too long at a stretch, truckers carrying loads for which they’re not authorized, and so far... Reporter Elisa Crouch shadowed officers. You’d be surprised at what she found. You’ll also learn about the myriad of regulations that truckers must abide by when they’re hauling their cargo. Elisa writes: Commercial vehicle enforcement officers like Stephens can pull over any truck they want, without probable cause, and inspect it. The reason: they’re enforcing state and federal transportation regulations that each year get stricter, as agencies work to reduce truck-related fatalities. Large trucks were involved in 4,440 fatal crashes in 2004, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Missouri had 132 fatal crashes involving trucks in that same year, while Illinois had 139...
