World's Top Automaker - Japan - Toyota aims to overtake General Motors
TOKYO,Japan -UPI/Asahi Shimbun -Dec. 8, 2005: -- Toyota Motor Corp. hopes to overtake General Motors as the world's top automaker, with plans to manufacture 8.9 million vehicles next year... The actual output this year is expected to be 8.28 million and the plan for 2006 is almost 9 million, including vehicles manufactured by Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., reported Thursday... By comparison, the GM group's yearly production is expected to be 9.089 million, falling below the 9.098 million produced in 2004... GM's slump is likely to push Toyota into position as the world's top automobile producer, the newspaper reported...
