It leased smaller trucks so anyone with a regular driver's license could drive them... Using smaller trucks is less efficient because it means more trips to and from the warehouse, but Shigemura said he saw no alternative... At the end of 2004, 24,988 Hawaii residents had commercial driver's licenses, a number more than sufficient to meet the state's needs. So why is there a shortage?... many truck and bus drivers, who usually make between $10 and $17 an hour, have found they can make a lot more as union drivers working in the construction trades. Driving a dump truck or a cement mixer can pay from $30 to $60 an hour...
