Jobs - USA - So many trucks, so few drivers

There's a trucking shortage - nationally and in Hampton Roads - and moves are afoot to recruit more drivers.
Newport News,VA,USA -Daily Press, by PETER DUJARDIN -Aug 21, 2005: -- A representative from a steamship line placed an urgent call to Shirley Roebuck, president of Portsmouth-based Gilco Trucking, two weeks ago. He wanted 15 truck drivers to haul containers of machinery to Texas.Roebuck could spare five truckers - and the steamship line quickly took her up on it. But she wished she had another 10 people to offer."I could keep 10 more drivers busy tomorrow," said Roebuck, who has 30 truckers working for her. "I could use forty or fifty drivers. Every day, we turn away freight because there's not enough drivers to handle it."...
