TATA MOTORS * India: 'Use Dipper at Night'

* Delhi - Indian truckers get their own condom brand

(Video by BWBusinessworld - Jun 22, 2016: Truck marketer Tata Motors wanted to promote safe sex among Indian truck drivers. Created by Rediffusion Y&R, 'Dipper Condoms' was to address this brief)

--- 'Use Dipper at Night.' The slogan that has revved the truckers' engines ever since is now becoming a condom brand especially for Indian truckers. All thanks to Tata Motors... A condom brand dedicated to Indian truckers has been finally been launched in the country to promote safe sex for truckers... All those heavily decorated trucks revving on the highways across India have one thing in common, a slogan. A slogan that has defined trucking for a very long time now. Remember Use Dipper at Night, the safety warning painted on the truck?... India's largest truck maker Tata Motors has teamed up with logistics and supply chain company Transport Corporation of India Ltd, the TCI Foundation, and communications agency Rediffusion for a pilot project that has already sold 45,000 packets of condoms at the foundation's health centers for truckers... To promote safer sex, they borrowed the warning often mentioned on Indian trucks, 'Use Dipper at Night', and out of that, they created a condom brand specifically for Indian truckers, called Dipper, and it only costs 2 bucks...

SEX WORKERS & TRUCKERS' JOB * Africa: Highways for HIV

* Africa's highways of heartbreak: Left untreated, those with the virus will inevitably go on to develop, and die

--- As night envelopes the South African city of Durban, the lights from its port - the largest on the continent - burn a deep orange reminiscent of fire... From here, and South Africa's other major port in Cape Town, roads thread out across the country, some skirting around the nation's largest city Johannesburg, before heading deep inland, crisscrossing the continent with their cargo... Fresh fruit and vegetables, raw materials and consumer goods funnel their way into the interior... However, there's something else hitching a ride. Something deadly. And it's almost as easy to unload as one of the truck's containers, HIV... Africa's main roads are highways for HIV. There is still no cure which means, left untreated, those with the virus will inevitably go on to develop, and die, from AIDS... AIDS deaths are almost unheard of in the west these days but globally a million people died from AIDS last year. Many of those are in Sub-Saharan Africa where the paths of so many sex workers and truckies intersect... Zimbabwe, it's the country where the main truck routes pass through after leaving South Africa...

... Where truckies stop the danger to their, and other people's health, starts. A proportion of the trucking community are very effectively transporting HIV across Africa, with Zimbabwe the nexus of the epidemic... The raw numbers tell a sorry story. One study, in Malawi, found AIDS killed more truckies than malaria or road accidents... And while the rate of HIV in the Zimbabwean general population is around 15 per cent, in sex workers it can be as high as 58 per cent... The highway that leads from Jacobs through Africa's heart is still stained with the tears of the young men and women who live, and sometimes die, from a disease we still can't cure...

HIV & TRUCKERS * Africa - Truck drivers and sex workers

* Mozambique - Fighting HIV in two high-risk groups: Sex Workers and Truck Drivers

--- She's a sex worker. She's clutching a glass of beer. She's drunk and can barely stand up... She triumphantly declares she's going to sleep with 20 men tonight... The woman is one of the many sex workers in the city of Beira in Mozambique — and one of the targets of a new pilot program set up by Doctors Without Borders to prevent the spread of HIV. The initiative focuses on sex workers and another group at high risk of infection — truck drivers... This part of southern Africa has been hit harder by HIV than any place in the world. In Mozambique roughly 1 in 10 adults are infected with the virus. And according to UNAIDS sex workers are 10 times more likely than the general population to be HIV positive... The city is a relatively small gritty port on the Indian Ocean. Trucks constantly move in and out of docks hauling cargo in to parts of Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo... Truckers spend weeks, even months, on the road ferrying loads of sugar, gasoline, auto parts and other loads of cargo between Beira and Central Africa. But it's not just cargo that moves along these transportation routes, it's also HIV... Not far from the Beira docks, there's a trash-strewn alleyway that at night becomes a hub of prostitution. Women and girls in tight skirts lean against a cement wall waiting for clients. Some of the sex workers are from Mozambique. But so many of them are from neighboring Zimbabwe... The Doctors Without Borders program offers weekly HIV testing and counseling for truckers all along the highway up to the border with Malawi. They also distribute free condoms at truck stops – and to sex workers... But just like the local trucker drivers, sex workers can easily move along the highway that extends from Mozambique into Central Africa...

TRUCKERS & HIV MIGRATION * India

* Delhi - Can 'Use dipper At Night' catchphrase help drivers curb HIV in India?

--- Drivers indifference towards importance of safe sex leads to the migration of the virus from high prevalence to low prevalence zones... The year was 2002. Prasoon Joshi, current APAC chairman of McCann Worldgroup, was working on an HIV awareness campaign for NACO (National AIDS Control Organisation). Researchers from his team were asking men from Tier II and III towns if they were inclined towards wearing a condom. One respondent told them that he wears a condom everyday but it gets loose by the evening. He didn't know a condom is to be worn during sexual intercourse. And then there's the possibly apocryphal story of a man who after seeing a demonstration of a condom on a banana, apparently covered the fruits with rubbers to stay safe from AIDS... The awareness around the disease and its causes has increased over the years but is still far short of the mark. And one classic 'low-awareness high-risk' category is truck drivers: a highly mobile population who spend their nights and days traversing the roads and highways of the country. And who tend towards promiscuous sexual behaviour...

... As per Dr Munish Chander, head of TCI (Transport Corporation of India) Foundation, HIV prevalence among truckers at 3.2% is higher than the national figure of 0.69%. And so, the foundation keeps trying to educate them on the significance of safe sex...  Similar to its mission is that of Tata Motors one of India's largest truck manufacturers. Over the last few years, the brand has decided to take the issue of AIDS head on. In April, Tata Motors launched a campaign called 'Use Dipper At Night'...  It's a phrase that resonates well with almost every truck driver in the country. But what has a night-driving guideline got to do with safe sex? Well, pretty much everything if you start a condom brand named Dipper, marketed exclusively to truck drivers...

TRUCK STOP PROSTITUTION * USA: TRUCKERS AGAINST TRAFFICKING

* Iowa - Waterloo man speaks up about truck stop sex trafficking

--- The United States Department and state officials say sex trafficking is a problem that they are trying to fix... They say people are unaware of how close it happens to them... That's not true for Waterloo truck driver Bobby Rigdon. He has a story he's carried for six years. "A woman of the night, prostitute, you know or trucker slang-lot lizard," said Rigdon. But he later learned, she wasn't a prostitute. "Obviously she was being controlled by somebody because she would of never looked like she did," Rigdon said. "Two black eyes and a broken nose, she has been beat." ... He realized there was more to her story, when he declined... Nearly six years later, those bruises haunt him as a reminder that some of these women are sex trafficking victims... The group says to look for any sign that they can't speak for themselves. If they look confused about their surroundings, or any reference to someone watching them, then those are all signs that they could be a victim... "Nowadays, a guy should just call 911," said Rigdon. "Report it. Hopefully someone will get out there. If they pick her up, maybe at least she's away from whoever is trying to control her" ... Truckers Against Trafficking recommends reporting anything that seems suspicious. According to organizers, they work closely with the FBI and have even rescued victims as young as 11 years old...

INSIDE the fragile and fraught lives of TRUCK STOP SEX WORKERS * USA

* California - The dark underbelly of truck stops

(Video by Pacific Standard - Feb 4, 2016: "Lot Lizard" is a feature documentary about truck stop sex workers in America. The film follows Jennifer, a recovering sex worker who is trying to get her life back on track; Bobby, a man struggling to come to grips with his girlfriend's livelihood; and Betty... These intimate portraits hint at a broader story about America, how it deals with its down and out, and how we are implicated as consumers)

-- In the world of trucking, things are often not what they seem... Inside a modest home in Ontario, California, the sun is setting on what seems to be—at first glance—a typical picture of domesticity... Up until six weeks ago, Jennifer, the woman in the scene, was having sex with truck drivers for money, then using that money to shoot heroin. Jim, the trucker on the road, isn’t Jennifer’s husband. Jim is her spiritual advisor, and a chaplain at the Trucker Chapel, a converted trailer parked at the local truck stop... She pours over newspaper job advertisements, tension building in her voice. “It’s hard because there are these crappy-ass jobs for $8.00 an hour, or I could work one day a week on the [trucking] lot and make $300 easily. It’s easy to suck anything up for a few hours to make some money” ... Ask a truck stop sex worker to tell you about the most outrageous sexual feat she (most of the sex workers we met were women, though there were a handful of men) has performed, and she’ll tell you everything. Ask her if she has any siblings, and she’ll walk away from the interview. From the few stories we were able to record about family life, we learned of the extraordinary abuse and neglect many of the women experienced throughout their childhoods. Jennifer, for instance, was sexually abused by her uncle while growing up in Idaho... At the Triple T truck stop in Tucson, Arizona, a sex worker named Betty dates truckers only a few miles from the trailer where her parents live. Her father met her mother at a truck stop. He is a former trucker, and a methamphetamine addict, and Betty’s mother is a former sex worker... Truck stop sex workers are often vocal about how they reject society’s definition of their labor and its judgment of their lifestyle...

... As unlikely as it is for two people to grow close in the world of truck stop sex work, Monica and Bobby stayed committed to one another while attempting to manage the forces (crack cocaine, sex, illness) that threatened to drive them apart... While each truck stop sex worker’s story is wholly unique, they all share a deep level of humanity. With Sunshine, there’s a familiar resistance to the ways in which society tries to shame and judge women. In Jennifer, we see a mother struggling to define herself and find salvation. Monica and Bobby’s story is, in large part, a reflection on the desire to love and be loved despite our many faults... By turning a camera of the faces of these women fighting each day for survival, the similarities that twine us together as a society can slowly make their way out from the shadows and into the light...

TRUCKERS AGAINST CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION * Brazil

* R. J. - Brazilian truckers are part of the problem

-- Truck drivers are part of the problem in the widespread sexual exploitation of children in Brazil along the nation's highways but they now are becoming part of the solution, experts say... Once truckers are trained in children's rights, attitudes toward exploitation change and they are less likely to have sex with children once they learn it is a crime, according to research by the charity Childhood Brazil... Brazilian truck drivers frequently pay for sex with children and teenage boys and girls at truck stops and loading areas, the charity said... One in five said they had sex with a child, and nearly three quarters said their colleagues had done so, according to interviews with 342 truck drivers in 2010, it said... Nearly 85 percent said it was common to see the sexual exploitation of children and teenagers along highways and at truck stops...

Child Trafficking * USA - How Truckers Are Putting the Brakes on

Prostitution at truck stops has become so ubiquitous, the industry has developed a term for the women -- "lot lizards"

Truckers Against Trafficking Teaser (3min) from iEmpathize on Vimeo.

USA -End Human Trafficking, by Amanda Kloer -October 20, 2010: -- There is one profession in America with the power to single-handedly thwart hundreds of pimps and traffickers across the country every day. It's not police officers, firemen, or even emergency room nurses. It's truckers. Truck drivers and the trucking industry are on the front lines of the child trafficking epidemic in the U.S. and many of them are putting the brakes on child trafficking...   In recent years, many of the girls and women previously slapped with this degrading label have turned out to be human trafficking victims. Just last month, a phone call from a concerned truck driver resulted in police finding a 14 and 15 year old girl who were being forced into prostitution at truck stops in Oklahoma. Another 2006 bust found 20 trafficked girls being pimped at truck stops in California, the youngest of them just 13. And one of the largest child trafficking rings ever busted by the FBI took place in truck stops across Pennsylvania and Ohio. Truck stops are increasingly becoming a hot-spot for child sex trafficking...   But truck drivers and trucking companies are uniquely poised to stop child sex trafficking at truck stops. Truck drivers are in an ideal position to observe the prostitution and trafficking that takes place at truck stops and report the presence of minors and adult women who look frightened or like they aren't in control of the situation. As frequent travelers, truckers have the opportunity to observe and report suspicious behavior or notice patterns as pimps move girls across state lines. Both male and female truckers can challenge the macho, male-dominated culture that can sometimes support the exploitation of girls and women within the industry. And of course, truckers can make the call that saves a girl from a lifetime of slavery, like in this excellent video from Truckers Against Trafficking...   But we need more than just individual truckers as the heroes in this story. We need more than just grassroots efforts, effective as they may be, from groups like Truckers Against Trafficking and The Defenders USA...

Sex behind the wheel? * USA

It’s a headline bound to grab the attention of even the most jaded reporter: 15% of respondents to six-country online survey admit to having sex or performing sexual acts behind the wheel while driving .. !!!

Aabyhøj,Aarhus,Denmark -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -May 26, 2010: ... The survey is based on responses from 1,800 consumers between the ages of 18 and 65, with an equal number from the U.S., United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and Japan... Conducted over a period commencing April 6 through April 9 this year, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1%, the survey asked respondents how often they performed specific activities while driving and how dangerous they consider the activities. The majority (75%) drives an average of 10 hours or less per week. Here’s what the survey uncovered:

• 29% of respondents admitted to having kissed others while driving, whereas a smaller, but surprising number (15%) said they have performed sex or other sexual acts while driving

• 28% confirmed they have sent text messages while driving

• 13% reported they have applied makeup while driving

• 12% admitted to having written or read emails while driving

• 10% reported reading newspapers or magazines while driving

• And 5% confessed to playing video games while driving, with another 5% saying they shaved while behind the wheel

Still, despite the survey’s small size and the above-mentioned ‘mischievous’ factor, the data gleaned from this survey clearly says a lot of work remains in terms of changing driver behaviors – and it won’t be a short-term process, that is for sure...

A fatal combination * India - Truckers frequently use illegal and unregulated roadside sex workers

With more road fatalities than any other country, a prevalence of HIV/AIDS amongst their workforce and dwindling demand for services, Indian truckers face tough times. But change might finally be on the trucker’s horizon

Mumbai,India -Side Ways, by Richard Middleton -12 September 2009: -- Problems begin once you hit any of India’s three million kilometres of roads. Wandering livestock, crater-sized potholes, poorly-maintained vehicles and little appreciation of regulations led to over 100,000 road deaths in 2007 alone, according to government figures. Another two million road users were seriously injured... "I’ve seen several many accidents on the roads," Mohamed told Sideways News, shading himself under his vehicle at Kidderpore Dock, Kolkata. "Sometimes the roads are not good enough, sometimes the drivers, sometimes the vehicles. This can be a dangerous job to do"... Sometimes the roads are not good enough, sometimes the drivers, sometimes the vehicles. This can be a dangerous job to do...

Changing horizon for Indian truckers

But change has been occurring across the country. A mile away from Kidderpore Dock is Sonagachi, home to over 8,000 Kolkatan sex workers. From here, the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) claimed international success by dramatically reducing HIV infection rates, empowering sex workers and encouraging condom use while fighting for sex work to be a recognised profession.
.. The action seems to be having an effect. World Health Organisation (WHO) supported figures saw infection rates fall from 5.5 million to 2.5 million between 2005 and 2007... But these numbers fail in comparison to the impact of HIV/AIDS on drivers and their families... (Photo:Truckers face hazards on the road)

TRUCKERS' EXTRAS * UK - Transportation and logistics industry has "Most successful extra-marital relations"

Those working in the transportation and logistics industry are more likely to manage an affair than other professionals - due to their impeccable time-management skills. They also have more legitimate excuses to use if things should not “go to plan”

London,UK -Manufacturing & Logistics IT -May 05, 2009: -- Illicitencounters.co.uk has released data plays host to around 4,000 professionals in the transportation and logistics industry. Sara Hartley, site representative, suggests that married people working in these fields are more likely than ever to be seeking out affairs... “Those in this industry have an advantage in that their jobs involve a great deal of scheduling. A successful affair requires planning, time-management, to avoid getting found out.”... Sarah Symonds, who has alledgedly had affairs with several celebrities, is quick to point out the importance of time-management for a successful affair, "In these economic turbulent times, scheduling an affair will become a challenge. Many men and women have also lost their number one alibi of 'working late at the office'”... “Since most affairs start at the workplace, I would expect many unhappy couples to now look on-line to replace that setting, and, whilst I don't condone infidelity, I guarantee that websites such as illicitencounters.co.uk will see a increase in members due to the sheer convenience and anonymity they offer."...

TRUCKERS & SEX * USA - In this economy, even sex doesn't sell

At Donna's Ranch, a brothel in Wells, Nev., most of the customers are long-haul truckers. High fuel and food prices have drained them of 'play money.' So the working girls sit and wait

Wells,Nev,USA -Los Angeles Times, by Ashley Powers -November 4, 2008: -- The women at Donna's Ranch are crowded around the kitchen table on a warm summer night, dining on stir fry, tugging at thigh-high dresses, griping about depleted bank accounts. At this northeastern Nevada bordello, which marks a gravel road's end, they woo grizzled truckers and weary travelers for a single reason: money... Lately, the women don't go home with much... Signs of the economic free fall have cropped up in many of Nevada's 25 or so legal brothels. The Mustang Ranch, for example, has a steady stream of customers, but the number of women vying for work has soared. Even a 74-year-old applied. This summer, the Shady Lady gave $50 gas cards to those who spent $300. The Moonlite Bunny Ranch offered extras to customers paying with their economic stimulus checks...
