A fatal combination * India - Truckers frequently use illegal and unregulated roadside sex workers
With more road fatalities than any other country, a prevalence of HIV/AIDS amongst their workforce and dwindling demand for services, Indian truckers face tough times. But change might finally be on the trucker’s horizon
Mumbai,India -Side Ways, by Richard Middleton -12 September 2009: -- Problems begin once you hit any of India’s three million kilometres of roads. Wandering livestock, crater-sized potholes, poorly-maintained vehicles and little appreciation of regulations led to over 100,000 road deaths in 2007 alone, according to government figures. Another two million road users were seriously injured... "I’ve seen several many accidents on the roads," Mohamed told Sideways News, shading himself under his vehicle at Kidderpore Dock, Kolkata. "Sometimes the roads are not good enough, sometimes the drivers, sometimes the vehicles. This can be a dangerous job to do"... Changing horizon for Indian truckers
But change has been occurring across the country. A mile away from Kidderpore Dock is Sonagachi, home to over 8,000 Kolkatan sex workers. From here, the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) claimed international success by dramatically reducing HIV infection rates, empowering sex workers and encouraging condom use while fighting for sex work to be a recognised profession... The action seems to be having an effect. World Health Organisation (WHO) supported figures saw infection rates fall from 5.5 million to 2.5 million between 2005 and 2007... But these numbers fail in comparison to the impact of HIV/AIDS on drivers and their families... (Photo:Truckers face hazards on the road)
