Giant Trucks * Australia - Begin two-year trial
Giant 30-metre, 77-tonne B-double trucks have been granted a two-year trial to move freight through designated Melbourne streets and regional highways
Melbourne,Australia -The Age, by JASON DOWLING -September 12, 2009: ... The State Government is introducing the trucks, which can carry 30 per cent more freight than those normally used, to service a big increase in cargo arriving at the Port of Melbourne. The trial of the trucks began yesterday... The giant trucks will be limited to their designated routes and each vehicle will be monitored through GPS tracking. They will not have any additional speed or lane restrictions compared with other trucks... The trucks, the length of 1½ cricket pitches, have special ''under-run'' guard rails to prevent cars becoming trapped beneath them... Don Hogben, director vehicle management and safety at VicRoads, said there would be strong monitoring of the trial... (Picture from caradvice.com.au: B double truck)
