* Iowa - Waterloo man speaks up about truck stop sex trafficking
--- The United States Department and state officials say sex trafficking is a problem that they are trying to fix... They say people are unaware of how close it happens to them... That's not true for Waterloo truck driver Bobby Rigdon. He has a story he's carried for six years. "A woman of the night, prostitute, you know or trucker slang-lot lizard," said Rigdon. But he later learned, she wasn't a prostitute. "Obviously she was being controlled by somebody because she would of never looked like she did," Rigdon said. "Two black eyes and a broken nose, she has been beat." ... He realized there was more to her story, when he declined... Nearly six years later, those bruises haunt him as a reminder that some of these women are sex trafficking victims... The group says to look for any sign that they can't speak for themselves. If they look confused about their surroundings, or any reference to someone watching them, then those are all signs that they could be a victim... "Nowadays, a guy should just call 911," said Rigdon. "Report it. Hopefully someone will get out there. If they pick her up, maybe at least she's away from whoever is trying to control her" ... Truckers Against Trafficking recommends reporting anything that seems suspicious. According to organizers, they work closely with the FBI and have even rescued victims as young as 11 years old...

Human Trafficking * USA - Organization urges truckers to speak out against prostitution problem

Oklahoma City,OK,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -4 May 2011: -- A truck stop in Oklahoma City made headlines recently after a judge ordered the owners to crack down on their prostitution problem or face being shut down...  While Oklahoma City police investigators told recently that human trafficking was not a factor at that particular truck stop, it’s on the rise at an alarming rate at truck stops around the country...  Many drivers admit they are annoyed by the “lot lizards” who knock on their doors, waking them up from their critical rest periods, sometimes several times a night. But few complain to truck stop managers or employees while they are parked and just head back out on the road because they don’t want the hassle...  One organization, Truckers Against Trafficking – or TAT – and Chapter 61 Ministries is urging truck drivers to be a voice and get involved in the critical fight against human trafficking. TAT estimates that between 200,000 and 300,000 individuals are being trafficked in the U.S. each year, many forced to work as sex slaves at truck stops... Prostitution * USA - Judge orders truck stop in Oklahoma City to crack down on

A judge has given a small truck stop in Oklahoma City 30 days to combat prostitution-related activities

Oklahoma,OK,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -April 14, 2011: ... On April 7, Oklahoma County District Court Judge, Bryan J. Dixon, found that prostitution-related activity at the Five Star Truck Stop “constitutes a public nuisance.” The judge ordered the property owner, Waleed Investments Inc., and its manager, Mian Rashid, who previously owned the business, to post “no trespassing” and “no soliciting” signs in “conspicuous places on the property” ... According to court documents, the judge also ordered them to repair, replace and enhance fencing to “completely separate the Five Star Truck Stop property from the motels to the east and the property to the south” and to continue permanent maintenance on the fencing surrounding the property... The truck stop must also increase lighting and add video cameras on the property, as well as “purchase, maintain and monitor video equipment” and must provide copies of video surveillance in “usable form” to police when requested... The judge has also ordered that truck stop personnel must provide 24-hour security and immediately hire Council on Law Enforcement and Training – CLEET – certified security guards “capable of taking trespassing prostitutes into custody” ... Bakersfield,CAL,USA -KERO23ABC -March 31, 2009: -- The Citizens Band Radio, or CB, may be a truckers eyes and ears, but it's also the voice of prostitution. The ladies refer to themselves as dates, while truckers call them lot lizards... "Yeah, they get on your truck, they flash you, ask if you want a date, they ask if you want company," said trucker Ralph Ramos... ABC 23 staked out the 24-7 truck stop on three different days and nights and each time, the prostitutes were heard communicating via CB radio to truck drivers. Each time they directed the trucks to what's called, "party row," where police say prostitutes meet up with their clients... Prostitutes ABC 23 spoke to say they charge on average $10 to $50 for oral sex and $100 for intercourse. Others simply charge for their time... Another prostitute named Tahara said, "It varies, sometimes you make $500 a day sometimes you go home with $50."...

PROSTITUTION * USA - Thousands’ of teens said caught up in web of truck stop prostitution

USA -The Trucker, by DOROTHY COX -27 Jan 2009: -- Some truckers claim prostitution is only a matter of working girls trying to make a living and therefore, victimless. But according to statistics — and law enforcement — they’re either fooling themselves, misinformed, or both. An ABC TV Prime Time Crime special this summer asserted that “thousands of teens are forced into truck stop sex,” with an FBI spokesman adding that truck stops are uniquely suited to prostitution because at night the parking lots are isolated and out of the view of the public and police... One former career driver from Saline County, Arkansas, told The Trucker that the back parking lanes are known as “party row.”... “Anywhere there are big trucks delivering goods you’ll find prostitutes, both male and female; it’s a fact of life,” he said... Statistics show that these prostitutes often have been brutalized or sexually molested by a father or other male family member. Many are involved in drugs, authorities say... (One FBI “sting” on a prostitution ring in December of 2005 charged 31 individuals in four U.S. FBI districts and involving several truck stops. “These children are victimized twice,” asserts FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker, “first by the handler who exploits them and secondly by the individual who solicits them.”)

TRUCK STOP PROSTITUTION * USA - Business fights back against truck stop prostitution

Johnson County,IN,USA -WTHR (Indianapolis,IN)/Eyewitness News, by Jennie Runevitch -Jan 23, 2009: -- Police say prostitution has become a constant problem along Indiana highways. They say businesses along I-65 are attracting more than semi traffic, and that they've become a hotbed for prostitutes cruising for customers... But Tuesday, a manager at Whiteland's Pilot Truck Stop took action. He called police after noticing the same car in the lot visit up to 30 times in the last two months... Investigators followed the car to the Flying J across the street. They saw a woman get out and spend time in a trucker's cab... Afterward, police arrested 21-year-old Carissa Chapman, who is eight months pregnant, for prostitution... The truck driver, 47-year-old Clayton Woodman, told police he paid her $80 for sex... Little Rock,ARK,USA -The Trucker, by DOROTHY COX -5 Dec 2008: -- ... But after talking a scant few minutes on his CB, Scott has located a young woman who can connect him with some “commercial company”... And then a girl who calls herself Stacey asks languidly if the cops are gone. She intermittently fades in and out on the CB, bantering with drivers in a sexy tone... After about 15 minutes Stacey is back on the CB, her signal louder and stronger than before. She’s ready to do "business" and asks Scott to tell her where his truck is... Then another trucker gets on the channel and offers to direct Stacey our way. Some truckers are ready to help prostitutes, Scott says, because they view their “business” as a type of free enterprise and they view prostitution as a victimless crime... Sgt. Terry Kuykendall, public information officer for the North Little Rock, Ark., police, says in his experience, truck stop prostitution nearly always involves runaways and drugs, especially drugs. “One way or another it all relates back to drugs,” with the drug of choice being either crack cocaine or methamphetamines, he told The Trucker... "No one knows exactly how pervasive truck stop prostitution is, but Kuykendall says “even when there are no complaints [about prostitution] it’s still an issue; it’s an issue all across the United States [involving] runaway teens and drug addicts. That’s why they’re there [at truck stops]"... Scott tells of male and female college students who get on the CB advertising for specific sexual services so they can make a lot of money in a short amount of time... But it is newbie driver Sarah Cleveland, 25, of Fort Worth, Texas, who was really steamed about the prostitute activity she witnessed first-hand. Cleveland, who is married to 22-year-old driver Anthony Cleveland, says when she was undergoing her second three-week stint of training to get her CDL her trainer kicked her out of the truck twice so he could be with a prostitute, once in Seattle and once in Iowa. “And he [the trainer] was married with three kids,” she says, adding that the trainer was heavy into pornography. “He only trained women,” she notes...
