TRUCK MAKERS CONSPIRATIONS * USA - Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Eaton-Truck Maker Conspiracy

Lawsuit says Eaton and truck makers conspired to keep ZF Meritor's FreedomLine transmission from being an option for truck buyers


Kansas,KNS,USA -TruckingInfo, by Deborah Lockridge -22 Oct 2010: -- A class action lawsuit accuses truck makers of conspiring with Eaton to help Eaton maintain a monopoly in the Class 8 truck transmission market, forcing up the price of trucks containing Eaton transmissions...   On Oct. 4, the New York-based plaintiff's law firm Murray, Frank & Sailer LLP filed a class action complaint in the U.S. Court for the District of Kansas on behalf of a nationwide class of Class 8 truck purchasers who indirectly bought Eaton transmissions by purchasing Class 8 trucks from October 2002 to the present...   The suit alleges that Eaton cut deals with truck makers to cut other transmission makers out of the market, especially ZF Meritor, which was forced out of the market. ZF Meritor is a joint venture of ArvinMeritor and ZF Friedrichshafen AG formed in 1999. Although ZF Meritor still exists as a legal entity, ArvinMeritor said it was forced to stop selling transmissions because of Eaton's actions...   Because of this, the suit claims, truck buyers paid more than they would have if there had been serious competition...   Named in the suit are Eaton Corp., Daimler Trucks North America LLC, Freightliner LLC, Navistar International Corp., International Truck and Engine Corp., Paccar Inc., Kenworth Truck Co., Peterbilt Motors Co., Volvo Trucks North America and Mack Trucks Inc....  Eaton issued the following statement in response to this new lawsuit:  "We are aware of the lawsuit that has been filed recently in Kansas Federal court. We believe that the claims in this suit are meritless and we will vigorously defend the company against these claims. While the majority of truck drivers have a responsible attitude to drink driving, how many are blissfully unaware that the booze they consumed last night may still be in their system the next morning? These are the people that Alcolock is primarily aimed at... The option is wired into the truck's ignition system, and requires the driver to blow into it before starting the engine. Should a dangerous alcohol level be detected, the truck will fail to start...

The vehicle is being presented at this week’s Truck and Bus World Forum, in Lyon (December 12th-14th), alongside the Hybrys, an urban concept vehicle using hybrid technology... Daimler had been regarded as the preferred bidder but Volvo has paid what many analysts regard as an inflated price, leaving Daimler - also keen to leverage itself into the mass Indian truck market - likely to announce a deal with the Hero Group before the end of the year...


* Sweden - Volvo invests in a company that builds hybrid forestry trucks

To mark the launch of the Shaping Future Transportation initiative, Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses today presented 16 trucks and buses featuring alternative drive systems and fuels... * China - Daimler Starts Building $284 Million Van Plant. And buy a 24 percent stake in Beiqi Foton Motor Co.
Beijing,China -Bloomberg, by Tian Ying -Oct. 23, 2007: -- Daimler AG, the world's biggest commercial-vehicle maker, started building a plant in China costing more than 200 million euros ($284 million) as the country's growth boosts van sales... The plant, in the southern city of Fuzhou, will make as many as 40,000 vehicles a year, including Mercedes-Benz Viano and Vito multipurpose vehicles and Sprinter vans. Annual sales of multipurpose vehicles in China may more than double to 500,000 from 200,000 in the next 10 years, according to Daimler... Daimler also plans to buy a 24 percent stake in Beiqi Foton Motor Co., China's largest commercial-vehicle maker. The 816.8 million yuan ($109 million) deal is awaiting government approval...

* Sweden - Market body says VW can up Scania stake

Stockholm,Sweden - Reuters -Sep 28, 2007: -- Sweden's securities council said on Friday it has given German auto giant Volkswagen permission to raise its stake in truck maker Scania without needing to make a bid for the whole firm... The council said a law firm had submitted a request on behalf of Volkswagen, the biggest owner of both Scania and German rival MAN, to be allowed to buy more shares in the Swedish truck maker without triggering a compulsory bid... Volkswagen, which owns 36.4 percent of Scania's voting rights and 20 percent of its capital, already has permission to own as much as 49.99 percent of the voting rights without making a bid, the council added in a statement...


* Sweden - Volvo Trucks suffers sales fall, especially in the US

* Japan - Nissan adds diesel hybrid option to Atlas delivery trucks

Tokyo,Japan -Autobloggreen (USA), by Sam Abuelsamid -Sep 28, 2007: -- As part of it's Nissan Green Program 2010, the Japanese company is adding compressed natural gas and diesel hybrid variants to it's Japanese-market commercial delivery trucks... The CNG version is a pretty straightforward example, running on natural gas and getting low emission vehicle certification. It also gets an automatic start/stop to eliminate idle emissions. The diesel hybrid is a little more complex. It uses two separate drive mechanisms for the diesel and electric motor with a power take off. This allows the vehicle to continue running even if the electric drive has a problem...

* UK - MAN unveils trucks for distribution and haulage

London,UK -Logistics Manager -27 Sept 2007: -- MAN has launched new ranges of trucks for distribution and long distance haulage. It has invested 100 million euros in the new trucks, designated TGS for distribution and TGX for long distance haulage. The models are equipped with D20 and D26 EGR common rail engines at ratings of 320 to 480hp... The trucks feature a lightweight design, including lightweight front axle suspension for the TGX. This contributes to an overall payload reduction of up to 120kg. Three cab options are available for both models..


* USA - Donaldson awarded Freightliner Masters of Quality Award

That’s because from the first of October new safety features will become mandatory for certain trucks and buses produced from that date... Key among them is anti-lock braking system or abs, a feature that lets a driver brake and steer simultaneously. Abs, which is mainly seen in premium passenger cars, will be mandatory for multi-axle tractor trailers, double decker transport vehicles, buses with all-India tourist permits and buses plying in hilly areas...

* Sweden - New Volvo Trucks investment in cab plant

Umeå,Sweden -Biglorryblog (UK) -14 Sept 2007: -- Volvo trucks it’s investing almost SEK 1.1 billion ( £74.3m) in its cab factory in Umeå... According to the official blurb the large dollop of dosh will be spent on: …"new production equipment as well as measures designed to increase capacity and flexibility in the production plant" ... Now it is the turn of the bodyshop to be modernised and redesigned to suit an entirely new level of technological advancement"... Previous investments have included the installation of a modern assembly line and a new paintshop – the world’s cleanest in terms of solvent emissions... The new adjusted permit to expand to 66,000 cabs per year was granted in April 2007...




* Navistar wins $71.5M contract to support MaxxPro parts in Marine MRAPs

USA -CCJ/eTrucker.com -17 Sept 2007: -- Navistar International Corp. announced Friday, Sept. 14, that its military affiliate, International Military and Government, has won a contract from the U.S. Marine Corps for $71.5 million to provide parts support for the Marine Corps’ International MaxxPro mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles... The contract builds on the more than $1 billion in total contracts the Navistar unit previously has announced to deliver 1,971 MaxxPro units to the Marine Corps. The MaxxPro is designed to protect troops from roadside bombs, improvised explosive devices and other threats...


* USA - International cabs pass test
USA -Fleet Owner -Sep 14, 2007: -- International Truck and Engine Corp. has announced the cabs of its DuraStar and WorkStar trucks now officially meet the roof-strength requirements of both the European ECE R29 and SAE J2422 rollover crash tests... The OEM said these tests evaluate the overall structural and roof strength of truck cabs to ensure they can withstand forces from different directions as well as a 180-degree rollover to ensure firefighters are protected from injury. The cabs provide the required occupant survival space when tested with roof loads up to 25,000 lbs– exceeding the maximum requirement of 22,000 lbs by a comfortable margin...
