The amount is a 14.35 percent surcharge of the registration fees... Ford said the state needs to look at ways to fund the capital construction bill, and this is one option. Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Times, by David Sharp -3 Feb 2009: -- Toll road collections are decreasing as people drive less during the recession. At the same time, maintenance and constructions costs are rising, prompting the nation's 75 turnpike operators to raise tolls. Toll revenue is used to pay off bonds as well as fund maintenance and upgrades. However, most turnpike authorities are autonomous and are not likely to benefit from proposed federal stimulus funds for states, says Paul Godfrey, a toll expert at HNTB, a nationwide engineering and consulting firm. HNTB said many of the 99 toll roads it monitors raised rates in 2008, including the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, New York State Thruway, and the turnpikes of New Hampshire. The New York State Thruway is considering an additional increase in 2009, as are the Maine Turnpike, Ohio Turnpike, Massachusetts Turnpike, New Jersey Turnpike, Kansas Turnpike, and John F.
