* New European tire label

Brussels,Belgium -Truck and Business, by Claude Yvens -31 Oct 2012: -- This November 1 officially in force between the new European tire label. The new label will provide a clear and objective information on three characteristics Tire rolling resistance, wet braking and noise... The first criterion, the rolling resistance is rated on a scale from A to G. A being the best score, G the least. Between A and G, the rolling resistance differs from 15% for truck tires... Second criterion: the braking distance on wet roads. In practice, the discretion given to this criterion goes from A to F, tires with a score less than F can no longer be sold at 1 November 2014... Third criterion: the noise level. The measured value is displayed in decibels and appreciation takes the form of three waves. The less yad waves blackened more evaluation is good. A tire with two waves displays three decibels louder that a tire with a single wave... But at least one criterion strongly influences the total cost of ownership: the life of the tire, or the mileage that it can go. It 's the main criterion will therefore trading outside the label ... and price...

* Ohio / USA - Goodyear’s self-inflating tire tech for commercial vehicles leaves the lab

Akron,OH,USA -Gizmag, by Darren Quick -September 20, 2012: ...  Many people drive around on tires at less than optimal pressure resulting in reduced performance and fuel economy. For the past year, Goodyear has been developing its self-inflating tire technology that's designed to keep tires inflated at the optimum pressure and the company is now set to debut the technology in Germany.Goodyear's Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) system automatically keeps tires inflated to the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics...  Goodyear is initially aiming its AMT system at commercial vehicle fleet operators, citing 2008 figures from the American Trucking Association that more than half of all truck and trailer breakdowns for such operators involve a tire in some way, making tire-related costs the single largest maintenance item for fleet owners. The simple act of keeping tires properly inflated can cut costs by improving fuel economy and prolonging tread life...


* China - US tariffs on Chinese exports of tires set to expire 

Beijing,China -People's Daily/Global Times, by Song Shengxia -September 24, 2012: -- US tariffs on Chinese exports of tires for passenger cars and light trucks are set to expire Wednesday, and domestic companies are anticipating a bump in sales... Analysts said that the expiry of the tariffs will boost exports of tires to the US and improve the profit margin for Chinese firms, but it will be hard for China to regain its dominant market share in the US tire market given the weak world economy... The deadline for "interested parties to request an extension of the tire tariff" has passed, Carol J Guthrie, assistant US trade representative for public and media affairs at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), said in a statement e-mailed to the Global Times...

USA - WTO upholds US tariffs on Chinese tyres

Washington,DC,USA -FT, by James Politi -December 13 2010: -- The US notched up a win in a trade dispute with China over tyre imports as senior officials gathered in Washington for a round of high-level economic talks... On Monday, a panel of the World Trade Organisation ruled that the US last year acted consistently with its obligations under global trade rules when it slapped levies of as high as 35 per cent on Chinese tyres used in cars and light trucks... The ruling on tyres, which can still be appealed, marks the second time the US has prevailed over China in a trade dispute in as many months, after a favourable October ruling on penalties the US imposed on Chinese industrial products including steel pipes...


* Japan - 3 major producers to hike truck, bus tire prices 7% in March

Tokyo,Japan -Japan Today -14 December 2010: -- Bridgestone Corp, Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd and Toyo Tire & Rubber Co have said by Monday that they will raise their domestic prices for truck and bus tires by an average of 7% in March...  While the three companies are making the move for the first time since September 2008 to reflect a rise in natural rubber prices caused by growing demand especially from China, another major producer, Yokohama Rubber Co., also said it is studying a price hike...  Natural rubber prices once fell due to the banking crisis from autumn 2008 before jumping three-fold in the past three years...  Toyo Tire, for example, says it has no choice but to pass higher prices on to customers as they have risen to record levels...  The transportation industry reacted with dismay. "Smaller firms, many of which offer long-haul (trucking) services, and companies with larger fleets of trucks in particular are susceptible to the price increase", an official with the Japan Trucking Association said...

Proper Tire Inflation * USA - Essential to Safety, Fuel Economy

Underinflated tires cost 9 cents per gallon

Chicago,ILL,USA -The Chicago Tribune, by Joe Bruzek -June 22, 2010: -- Properly inflated tires can improve fuel efficiency by 3.3 percent, saving consumers 8 cents to 9 cents per gallon at the pump, the Environmental Protection Agency says... The agency also says fuel economy drops 0.3 percent for every one-pound drop in air pressure in all four tires, so at least in theory, having four severely underinflated tires could reduce gas mileage more than 3.3 percent... Plenty of motorists are guilty of riding on underinflated tires and wasting fuel. A 2009 tire pressure survey by the Rubber Manufacturers Association found that about half of all vehicles have at least one underinflated tire. Worse, nearly 20 percent have at least one tire underinflated by 8 pounds per square inch, the survey says. Tires wear out faster, don't grip as well in turns and have reduced load-carrying capability when underinflated... Bottom line: There are no benefits to running on underinflated tires and plenty of good reasons to keep them at the proper pressure... (Photo from Cars.com)

Concerned over surge in imports particularly from China, India has slapped anti-dumping duty on several radial tyres

New Delhi,India -The Times of India, by Dan Calabrese -Feb 23, 2010: ... The anti-dumping duty is a WTO compatible remedy available to protect domestic industry against cheap imports... The tyre makers seemed pleased with the dumping duty of up to $99 per a set of bus and truck radial tyres (including tubeless) from China and Thailand, while the vehicles makers opposed the move saying it is "detrimental to the industry that is trying to come out of recession"... The CBEC in a notification said imports, which caused "material injury" to the domestic manufacture by way of shipping them at below "normal value" have come from China, Taiwan, the US, EU, South Korea, among others... India runs a huge trade deficit with China...

Michelin Stoke has successfully applied for and accepted Government grant aid of up to £3.9 million towards the funding of modernisation from the Department for Business Innovation and Skills... * UK - Dunlop rolls out new fuel-efficient long-haul tires

Birmingham,UK -Fleet Owner (USA) -Feb 11, 2010: -- Goodyear’s Dunlop division has introduced a new line of fuel-efficient long-haul tires that are expected to save fleet owners up to 4% in fuel bills, as compared to using standard Dunlop long-haul tires. They also qualify as a “verified fuel saving technology” under the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program... Dunlop stated that the new FM line of steer, drive and trailer tires – when used in all positions – should achieve those fuel savings, though the tire maker was quick to caution that actual results may vary based on when tires are replaced as well as driving and road conditions, and proper tire maintenance...


* Germany - Continental beefs up load rating for drive tire

Hanover, Germany -Fleet Owner -Feb 11, 2010: -- Continental Tire is adding an extra load rating for its HDL2 DL [Heavy Drive Long Haul Deep Lug] tire. The tire model itself was introduced in January 2009... The additional rating is a load range H in the 11R22.5 size, giving this Continental drive tire additional capacity of 435 lbs of useful load in a single fitment, said the company... The HDL2 DL is produced at Continental’s Mount Vernon, IL plant and represents its deepest truck tire tread offering at 32/32” depth...


* Belgium - Bridgestone answer call to stricter European control with two new truck tyres

The two new truck steer-axle tyres R249 EVO and R297 EVO, have been introduced to the market in anticipation of increased front axle load for trucks. This increased front axle load is due to the addition of new clean technologies such as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) which are set to meet with Euro V and VI emission regulations. * India - Comment: Price behind tyre cos, truck makers' feud

New Delhi,India -DNA, by Sindhu Bhattacharya -February 16, 2010: -- The ongoing spat between tyre companies and makers of commercial vehicles has its genesis in pricing and not in inadequate capacities at the tyre makers’ end. In fact, India’s leading tyre makers are investing as much as Rs 9,000 crore over the next three years in expanding capacities to make just truck and bus radials... Leading CV makers such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and even Mahindra & Mahindra have been facing tyre shortages all of January because of “diversion” of radials as well as bias tyres to the after (replacement) market instead of supplies being completed to vehicle makers... The situation remains unresolved as of today, with CV makers...


* France - Michelin Profit Falls 71% on Vehicle-Industry Slump

Paris,France -Bloomberg/Business Week, by Laurence Frost -February 12, 2010: -- Michelin & Cie., the world’s second- largest tiremaker, said profit tumbled 71 percent last year as sales to automakers and trucking companies plunged and reorganization costs rose... Net income fell to 106 million euros ($145 million) from 360 million euros in 2008, short of the 121 million euros expected by analysts. The French company gave no outlook for this year, beyond pledging to maintain a positive cash flow...


* USA - Four More Yokohama Tires Earn SmartWay Verification

Washington,DC,USA -Truckinginfo -16 Feb 2010: -- Four more Yokohama commercial truck tires have been added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay list of verified fuel-saving technologies for tires. This brings the number to seven of Yokohama products that are recognized as SmartWay "low rolling resistance tires"... SmartWay Transport, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight sector, is designed to improve energy efficiency and energy scrutiny, and reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions... The Yokohama commercial tires receiving SmartWay status are the 101ZL and 103ZR steer tires, RY587 trailer tires and the TY517MC2 drive tires...

Tire Tariff * USA - Another trade war?

The big concern about the institution of any tariff is whether or not it winds up the first shot fired in a trade war between two nations

Washington,DC,USA -Fleet Owner, by David Cullen -Sep 18, 2009: -- There may well be more to the tariff being placed on tires made in the People’s Republic of China this month than the impact it will have on the purchase price of such tires for owners of passenger cars and light trucks. Once such a diplomatic dispute is under way, escalation can set in rapidly and soon other industries are impacted... The tariff takes effect on September 26 and will affect primarily tires sold at the lowest price points for cars, SUVs, pickups and vans. The tariff is multi-year, imposing a 35% duty in the first year, 30% in the second, and 25% in the third. But under the 421 Safeguard provisions of the World Trade Organization, President Obama can revisit the decision after six months and then modify, remove or leave in place the tariff decision... Not surprisingly, the Chinese government adamantly opposes the U.S. action as unwarranted protectionism... According to the United Steelworkers (USW), which pushed for the tariff: “When China joined the WTO in 2001, it agreed that other WTO members, including the U.S., would have the right for 12 years to impose safeguard relief on goods from China when imports of those goods increased rapidly and caused injury to domestic industries. .. [and] China does not have the right to retaliate against actions that are WTO-consistent” ... Aaron Murphy, vp of China Manufacturers Alliance (CMA), which markets Chinese-made Double Coin commercial truck tires here, told FleetOwner that “there’s a lot of politics driving this. There are [421 Safeguard] provisions that allow the U.S. to review the action in six months. This was definitely a political [move] vs. coming out of an economic issue… and so it will take the governments talking to each other” to resolve it... Tires Makers * USA - CTNA introduces HTL1 wide-base truck tire

Fort Mill,SC,USA -MTD -June 30, 2009: -- Continental Tire North America Inc. (CTNA) has rolled out its HTL1 wide-base medium truck tire for trailer positions... The tire contains 13/21-inch tread depth, which minimizes irregular wear and maximizes fuel efficiency; a six-rib design for even load distribution over the crown of the tire; a decoupler rib for "better irregular wear resistance at the shoulder;" and other features... The HTL1 is available in size 445/50R22.5. It can operate at a maximum load of 10,200 pounds at 120 psi...

Monrovia,CAL,USA -MTD (USA) -June 10, 2009: -- China Manufacturers Alliance LLC (CMA) introduced six Double Coin medium truck tires in Memphis, Tenn., earlier today... Three of the radials are being marketed as fuel-efficient, ultra-premium tires. Their advanced tread compounding and internal construction result in low rolling resistance and long mileage, according to the company... The Double Coin brand has 1.5% of the U.S. replacement medium/heavy truck tire market, according to Modern Tire Dealer research...
