* DC- 5 Crossovers and SUVs That Car Thieves Love

(Photo: 2011 Ford Escape)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Feb 6, 2013: -- Crossovers and sport-utility vehicles are big business in the U.S. -- not just among shoppers, but also with car thieves. Could your ride be targeted next? The National Insurance Crime Bureau has sifted through nearly five years of data to identify the most-stolen models and the areas of the country that criminals prefer... NICB reviewed car theft stats from January 1, 2008, to June 30, 2012. The organization wanted to focus primarily on thefts of new vehicles, so its study only included crossovers and SUVs from the 2009, 2010, and 2011 model years. That left the NICB with 19,961 incidents of theft to examine...

Four of the five most-stolen SUVs and crossovers came from Detroit automakers:
 -- Ford Escape: 1,014 thefts
 -- Chevrolet Tahoe: 856 thefts
 -- Toyota RAV4: 801 thefts
 -- Ford Edge: 739 thefts
 -- Dodge Journey: 721 thefts

The more populous states tended to report more thefts of SUVs and crossovers:
* California: 3,003 thefts
* Texas: 1,826 thefts
* Florida: 1,784 thefts
* New York: 1,754 thefts
* Michigan: 1,367 thefts

And here's a list of the five most active metro areas:
 - New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island (NY, NJ, PA): 2,438 thefts
 - Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana (CA): 1,229 thefts
 - Detroit-Warren-Livonia (MI): 1,215 thefts
 - Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach (FL): 910 thefts
 - Chicago-Joliet-Naperville (IL): 762 thefts

Here's a list of the five SUVs and crossovers most likely to remain on the lam:
 . Toyota Highlander: 29.9% unrecovered
 . Jeep Wrangler: 28.6% unrecovered
 . Cadillac Escalade: 23.5% unrecovered
 . Nissan Murano: 19.2% unrecovered
 . Lexus RX: 18.7% unrecovered

VEHICLES' THIEVES * USA

* DC - These are the ten cars thieves most want to steal

(Photo)
Washington,DC,USA -Jalopnik -4 Nov 2011:  --  The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows thieves would rather snatch a high performance car over chop-shop money-makers like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. In 2009 numbers, released last night, the Audi S8 and Shelby GT500 Mustang jumped to the top of the list of preferred targets for a generation of car thieves raised on Grand Theft Auto...  Let's be clear here — this isn't a list of the ten most stolen cars in America...  Everyone wants high horsepower. It's just that they're harder to find in places where they're easy to steal...  Topping NHTSA's list of cars stolen in 2009 was the awesome Audi S8 with a take rate of 8.81 thefts per 1,000 vehicles produced. It seems as though America's carjackers love the Transporter as much we do...  The list also excludes light trucks and SUVs — which are actually atop the list of the most stolen vehicles in America. Again, these are just cars, and they're listed by tops in thefts-per-vehicles-produced...

Cargo Thieves * Mexico - Getting More Aggressive and Sophisticated

Mexican Situation Getting Extreme; 40 Attacks since 2008 for Third Largest Steel Maker

Mexico City,MEX -Supply Chain Digest -June 2, 2009: --
Across the globe, cargo robberies and hijackings are increasing in frequency, violence, and sophistication... Once largely the province of amateurs, the practice is now largely run by professionals, with hundreds of known gangs in Europe alone. A relatively modest problem in the US, cargo theft is a major and growing problem in many parts of Europe, South America, Malaysia and Mexico – and increasingly violent... “Our trucks always travel in Mexico with an armed guard,” a director of transportation for GM told SCDigest last year... With a huge chunk of Mexican government and police resources tied up in the fight against the drug cartels there, thieves are ramping up their efforts to steal freight, says a story today from Reuter’s news... The thieves not only carry heavy fire power, but increasingly sophisticated equipment to unload the stolen cargo and move it quickly to the black market. Everything from steel to coffee to food products is being targeted... A steel industry association in the country says robberies against its members rose by 250 percent in 2008, making away with some 12,500 tons of steel worth some $11 million. The pace has been maintained or accelerated in 2009... Law enforcement officials in Mexico say the drug wars may be partly responsible, as some members of the drug gangs splinter off and look for lucrative lines of work less targeted right now by authorities...

Thieves * UK -Use jammers to disable tracking systems

London,UK -Road Transport -15 November 2007: -- Truck thieves in Warwickshire have started using jamming devices to disable GPS tracking systems, say police... Detective Constable Andy Round of specialist truck crime unit Truckpol says intelligence suggests the jamming units are circulating among criminals in Warwickshire... Police believe one was used in the hijacking of a vehicle at Hams Hall on 24 September when a trailer with a tracking system was disabled so that a very weak or non-existent tracking signal was given out after the vehicle was stolen...
