SAFETY TRUCKS * USA: The ROADCHECK 2016

* Maryland - International Roadcheck set for June 7-9 with special emphasis on tire safety

-- The date for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 29th annual International Roadcheck has been confirmed... This year’s International Roadcheck is set to take place June 7-9 – when approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial, territorial and federal inspectors in jurisdictions across North America perform large truck and bus safety inspections... Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles globally, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during the three-day period... For the most part, during International Roadcheck, inspectors conduct a Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both the driver and vehicle... Each year, the officers place special emphasis on a category of violations. The special emphasis for the 2016 International Roadcheck is tire safety (i.e., measuring the tire tread depth, checking the tire pressure, checking to make sure no items are lodged between dual tires, and examining the overall condition of the tire to ensure no deep cuts or bulges exist in the sidewalls of the tire). While checking a vehicle’s tires is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA is highlighting tire safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers in 2016...

-- Employers across Ireland have been urged to make road safety a ‘critical part’ of their business plans at a European conference organised by the European Transport Safety Council, the Road Safety Authority, the Health and Safety Authority and Garda Síochána... Superintendent Con O’Donohue, An Garda Síochána, spoke at the conference about driving for work from a policing perspective, “Last year, we estimate that as 23% of injury collisions on our roads involved someone who was working. This is particularly worrying for An Garda Síochána and all of the agencies working in road safety"... He added, “Employers and employees need to be mindful of their legal duty of care and this extends to any journey undertaken as part of work. I urge employers to ensure safe driving for work practices amongst their employees and not to put employees under pressure to meet deadlines or demands, or take or make calls while driving, all of which would result in increased risk to the employee and other road users” ...

Operation * USA / Canada / Mexico - Safe Driver Campaign

New York,NY,USA -Car Accidents, by Roy S. Hiller -14 December 2010: -- New figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that highway fatalities and injuries are on the decline. Still more than 2.2 million people were injured and 33,808 died on America's roadways. Many of these human losses were the direct result of general and commercial vehicle accidents. As a result, several federal agencies, the trucking industry and other organizations have joined together to make our nation's roads safer. Each October, these stakeholders, along with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), take part in the Operation Safe Driver campaign... Launched in 2007, Operation Safe Driver is an initiative developed to combat the staggering number of deaths related to commercial truck, bus, and passenger vehicle crashes. The campaign is an international effort. As part of the annual campaign, several activities are held across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The main goal for Operation Safe Driver is to increase enforcement of safety belt laws, improve driver roadside inspections, enforce traffic and regulatory compliance, as well as implement driver education and awareness programs...

Washington,DC,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -20 Sept 2010: -- With the second national federal Distracted Driving Summit set for Sept. 21, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee approved recommendations on the subject three weeks earlier... The committee approved recommendations on decreasing distracted driving Aug. 30, which included assessing strengthened enforcement and education. The committee is comprised of stakeholders such as trucking, safety and enforcement leaders and provides advice to the agency on tasks it assigns members... The committee recommended the agency assess enforcement, including sanctions for technologies that cause distracted driving and classifying distracted driving violations and moving violations... It advocated the FMCSA undertake trucker education initiatives, such as mandating periodic training in addition to entry-level driver training... The committee also recommended that FMCSA assess research to develop standards for installing or modifying in-cab technologies that may cause distracted driving and focus on improving data issues, such as quantifying crashes resulting from distracted driving...


* November 2010 Elections: Speed, red-light cameras on the radar

DC,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Keith Goble -September 20, 2010: -- With Election Day six weeks away, voters in several communities around the country soon will be making decisions on what to do about automated enforcement. Among the communities that are slated to vote on the issue are two cities in the western United States... The use of red-light and speed-zone cameras has been a hot-button topic this year in one community in northwest Washington... The Nov. 2 ballot in Mukilteo, WA, can include a question on cameras to enforce traffic violations. The community located 25 miles north of Seattle will be the first in Washington to get a say on the issue... Ballots in Anaheim, CA, also will include a question on red-light cameras. Measure No. 1 will allow voters to decide whether to permanently prohibit the enforcement tool... If approved, the cameras would be outlawed from use in the city unless voters go back to the ballot and change the rule...

Halifax,NS,CAN -The Chronicle Herald, by LINDA CORKUM -Jun 2. 2010: -- The Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association (NSTSA) promotes safe workplaces for all trucking companies and their employees in our province... A growing number of our members have taken their safety responsibilities to new heights by signing on to our association’s challenging "Certificate of Recognition" safety program. Compliance with this program demands high standards of safety performance and a commitment to health and safety by everyone within a safety certified company. It also serves as a double check for these companies... Too many motorists in Nova Scotia consider trucks on highways, city or town streets nothing more than large obstacles to be avoided. From my experience in working with the trucking industry, truck drivers often view motorists in much the same way... The trucking industry is key to our economy. Ninety per cent of goods entering and leaving Nova Scotia are transported by truck. Statistics gathered in 2008 showed Nova Scotia employed 7,300 truckers that year... Dangerous Driving * USA - Riding with professional truckers, troopers have front-seat view on

Topeka,KN,USA -The Topeka Capital Journal, by Ann Marie Bush -May 21, 2010: -- Eskridge resident Don Logan, who has been driving semitrailers for more than 20 years, spent this week at the wheel of a semitrailer for the Trucks on Patrol for Safety program, which is conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol. A trooper rides along in the passenger seat and looks for motorists committing moving violations. The trooper then radios other troopers... Don Logan has been driving semitrailers for more than 20 years and knows first-hand the dangers posed by motorists who aren't aware of the big rigs on the road... The Trucks on Patrol for Safety, or TOPS, is conducted by the patrol and supported by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration... Professional drivers who operate large trucks are teaming up with patrol troopers who use their front-seat view from the semitrailer to witness, document and report violations to other troopers in the area. SAFETY * USA - Nebraska Begins Program

Omaha,NB,USA -KET TV -November 6, 2009: -- Some people get nervous when a 40-ton semitrailer passes by on the highway at 75 mph. They may have good reason to worry because a number of those trucks shouldn't be on the road... The KETV NewsWatch 7 I-Team discovered there's a new effort to keep everyone safe, one that people wish had arrived sooner... A simple memorial stands in the middle of Interstate 80 in western Nebraska. Flowers cover a cross in memory of Robyn Pittman... Pittman was part of a road crew that was working on a section of I-80 on Sept. 8 when a set of wheels came off a passing semitrailer, careened across the median and hit her... Investigators said they found a number of safety violations on the truck. They said it shouldn't have been on the road... The Nebraska State Patrol is now teaching law enforcement officers how to investigate the cause of big rig wrecks. The training sessions are the only ones of their kind in the country, drawing officers from across the United States... Dublin,Ireland -HGV -19 Aug 2009: -- The Road Safety Authority (RSA), Age Action and Irish Pharmacy Union are reminding Older Persons that they still have time to pick up a free high visibility jacket from their local Pharmacy... The joint initiative, launched earlier in the summer, between the three organisations aims to distribute 200,000 high visibility jackets in the community and target older cyclists and pedestrians who are vulnerable road users... Commenting on the venture Noel Brett, CEO, RSA said: "I would strongly encourage all older persons to avail of this great free offer by calling into you're your local Pharmacy and picking up a free high visibility jacket. Thousands of semi-trucks are seen on Idaho's highways and roads every day, and according to Idaho State Police, there are 1,600 crashes involving semi-trucks and smaller vehicles every year... For that reason, Idaho State Police has joined forces with local law enforcement agencies to start the TACT (Targeting Aggressive Cars and Trucks) program in Eastern Idaho... * Minnesota Trucking-related Fatalities Drop Nearly 18%

Perham,MINN,USA -The Perham Enterprise Bulletin -July 17 2009: -- Cars and trucks collided less often in Minnesota during the past year, resulting in a 17.8% drop in trucking-related fatalities... According to statistics reported in the latest edition of Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, published by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the number of truck-related fatalities dropped from 90 in 2007 to 74 in 2008... The number of persons injured in truck-related crashes also went down, dropping 18.3% during the same period... There were 287 fewer truck-related crashes in 2008 vs. 2007, representing a reduction of 6.2%...

Road Safety Campaign * Ghana - Shippers Council Embarks On

The Council organized an open forum in Kumasi where stakeholders met to educate the truck owners and drivers to ensure safety as their importance in the distributive trade of the economy cannot be overemphasized... A deputy Chief Executive of the GSC, Mr. Emmanuel Martey, told participants at the forum that educating the industry players is seen as one of the necessary measures needed to infuse a culture of safety in haulage truck drivers... Alabama State Troopers agree, for the most part it's aggressive drivers around the trucks that are responsible for the messes

Birmingham,AL,USA -CBS 42 News, by Phillip Ohnemus -18 Dec 2008: -- ... And as Professional Truck Driver Chuck Hallmark points out the public is often too quick to blame the truck driver. "The stats say 8 out of 10 accidents are the cars fault. Yet we seem to get blamed for everything in the press"... As Trooper Charles Dysart explains that's why troopers are now stepping into the cab to help bring a stop to aggressive driving... But don't expect to be pulled over by a big rig, instead troopers riding shotgun will radio ahead and allow cruisers to make the stop... And Hallmark agrees the program will make roads safer. "If you can get a more even balanced reporting on what's going on out there, you'll see what we're going through"... And while Alabama State Troopers are doing all they can to target and eliminate aggressive driving, they can't do it alone. The association points out there are a number of things to remember when it comes to sharing the road with a truck, or a lot of trucks, for that matter, and they have resources available in that regard too... They include the OTA Road Knights Team. This is a group of professional truck drivers, committed to road safety, who volunteer their time and energy to share knowledge with the community. They travel around, making oral and video presentations. At requests, they can bring tractor trailers for demonstrations, even offering people a look at the world from the vantage point of a truck driver...

Safety Campaign * USA - Alabama state patrol issues nearly 23,000 tickets

The state of Alabama is sending out a loud message that they are "taking back the highways" to combat increasing traffic fatalities

Col. J. Christopher Murphy of the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports that Alabama traffic deaths are at their all time highest since 1973... "At a time when traffic fatalities nationwide are on the decline, we cannot say the same is true for Alabama," he said. Traffic deaths rose five percent, bringing the 2006 total to 1,208; whereas nationwide deaths fell two percent...

* Ohio patrol targets big-rig/auto spacing

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is waging a statewide campaign aimed at cutting down on fatal and serious-injury accidents between big rigs and smaller vehicles
Columbus, OH,USA -The Trucker -20 Aug 2007: -- ... Lt. Robert D. Warner, a spokesman for the OSHP’s Licensing and Commercial Standards at Columbus, Ohio, said on Aug. 15 that statistics show some 70 percent of all such accidents “are caused by a non-commercial motor vehicle driver"... Warner noted that “based on provisional statistics through May of this year, there were 58 commercial vehicle-related crashes resulting in 62 deaths in Ohio. Of those, 81 percent were the fault of the non-CMV driver. Violations including excessive speeding, improper lane changing, and not leaving sufficient space around a CMV will be strictly enforced,” stressed... Warner said: "Troopers are placed in the troublesome corridors to aggressively enforce crash-causing violations of non-CMVs driving near CMVs”... Those corridors in Hamilton and Franklin counties are be supplemented by troopers from the OSHP’s motorcycle units. Aviation resources are also used in conjunction with officers on the ground...

* Anti-drunk driving campaign preceded by advertising blitz
Arlington,VA,USA -The Trucker -20 Aug 2007: -- The message is clear: if you drive drunk, you’ll be arrested and prosecuted... State highway safety and law enforcement agencies nationwide are waging war against drunk driving and their efforts are being highlighted with a massive advertising blitz... To underscore the importance, representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), gathered outside the Arlington County Courthouse in Virginia on Aug. 20... The enforcement crackdown, known as “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest,” includes sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as well as an $11 million national television and radio campaign. The timing of the crackdown, which will span the last weeks of summer vacation and include the Labor Day holiday weekend, is a heavy travel time and period of increased drunk driving fatalities and injuries...
