OLD TRUCKS OFF THE ROADS * India: Vehicle modernisation programme

* Delhi - Incentives likely only for buyers replacing old commercial vehicles with new ones

--- The primary intention is to reduce emissions and the priority is to get old fuel-guzzling and polluting trucks off the roads, said government sources... The voluntary vehicle fleet modernisation programme (V-VMP) that the government is working on will focus initially on incentivising buyers of new commercial vehicle and keep passenger vehicles out of its ambit... The programme proposes to offer tax benefits and discounts to people who junk old vehicles and replace them with new ones... According to government estimates, the programme may take 28 million polluting vehicles off the road. The scheme would enable domestic generation of Rs 11,500 crore worth of steel scrap every year... A second government official said staterun MSTC and several Japanese companies have evinced interest in setting up recycling and shredding centres for vehicles...

OLDER TRUCKS * USA, NJ/NY Ports: Authorities has reversed plans

* New Jersey - Ports Authority drops plan for banning older trucks at ports

-- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has reversed plans to ban older trucks that fail to meet emission standards from hauling cargo at the Newark and Elizabeth seaports... The agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced five years ago they would deny entry to all trucks that didn’t meet 2007 federal emission standards beginning next year to help improve air quality, but officials said they underestimated the cost... Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman told it would have cost more than $150 million in grants to drivers to help replace 6,300 trucks built before 2007... The agency is instead committing $1.2 million to help drivers who own their own vehicles to replace about 400 trucks, along with $9 million from federal agencies. Trucks that are older than 2007 and already registered at the ports will still be able to pick up and drop off cargo. Older trucks that aren’t registered will be banned...

Big Rigs * Canada - OLD TRUCKS TARGETED

* Port of Vancouver licensing changes mean higher costs, loss of revenue for drivers

... The Port Metro Vancouver execs were trying to reinvent the wheel and truck drivers, especially big rig owner-operators, were going to pay the price... It was hard to keep abreast of the changes they came up with, on what seemed to be an hourly basis, but here it is, halfway into 2015 and we seem to be back were we started... Suffice it to say, owner-operators were told everyone was OK to enter the ports if they updated their truck engines with super expensive emission doodads... Then, almost at the deadline date for that installation to be completed, the rules changed. Older trucks were not going to be allowed after all... The new rule, the port said, was that only companies with a minimum of five trucks would be granted entry. Oh, and that will cost you $45,000 !! ... Other drivers were assured their trucks would be ‘OK’ until the end of 2016... But on Jan. 31 that rule changed again, and suddenly a lot of drivers were parked, with permission to enter the ports denied... The ports then had yet another brain-storm. They now promised all those drivers who were suddenly denied entry that the port would give them each three instalments of $5,000 (minus taxes) to tide them over till the drivers found new ways to earn a living. Those payments have been made...

PHASEOUT OF TRUCKS * Philippines - Trucks for hire: That already have 15 years old or older

* Quezon City - Groups press moratorium on phaseout of 15-year-old trucks

-- Truckers' groups on Monday trooped to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to press for a moratorium on the implementation of the LTFRB's phaseout of trucks for hire that are already 15 years old or older... The Integrated North Harbor Truckers' Association, Bulacan Truckers' Association and the Aduana Business Club conducted a motorcade and held a rally in front of the LTFRB office in Quezon City... The LTFRB imposed the policy supposedly to ensure the roadworthiness of trucks, but the business groups argue that the age of the vehicles should not be the standard to determine their safety and efficiency... INHTA president, Teddy Gervacio, said that at present, there are 300,000 registered trucks for hire in Metro Manila. He said 80 percent of these trucks are already more than 15 years old... He warned of a shortage in trucks plying the business routes if the LTFRB continued to implement the policy... LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez, however, said that the program would proceed as planned. and as implemented since 2012. He also said that the policy on determining roadworthiness of trucks can still be modified since dialogues with stakeholders are still on-going...

Passion for old truck * Canada - How the Mack came back

Ontario man with a passion for old trucks spent a decade lovingly restoring a ravaged icon of heavy hauling

Toronto,ONT,CAN -The Globe & Mail, by BOB ENGLISH -July 3, 2009: -- The 1935 Mack BM truck owned by Garry Mack spent its early hard-working years hauling gasoline to Toronto service stations for the British American Oil Co., and was then employed by Canadian Pacific Railways in Western Canada. It was saved from a likely fate on the scrapheap by one truck enthusiast, then reconceived and immaculately reborn in the hands of another... It's always amazed me how the minds of old-vehicle enthusiasts function. It's hard to imagine how their mind's eye can take the reality of something like the derelict old Mack workhorse that was found decaying in a CP warehouse that was being torn down in Calgary and envision it becoming a fully restored reminder of a bygone era... Mack did virtually all the work on the truck himself, with a little help here and there from friends McBride and Milt Fredsburgh. The paint was donated by DuPont, which Mack had spent 35 years working for before retiring seven years ago... As trucks were usually painted in company livery, originality didn't matter and this Mack's colour scheme was chosen to make it unique. Mack says on visits to truck shows he'd overlook the field from a high point and soon determined most were painted red, black, grey or green. "I wanted something that would make it stand out," he says... And the two-tone blue Mack certainly does, but not just for its paint scheme or even Mack's painstaking restoration efforts - its one of only about a dozen survivors of its type and one of only three in Canada... Antique Truck * Fire dept. spent 10 years restoring 1937 American LaFrance pumper

Dover,DEL,USA -The Daily Record, by MELANIE HIRSHBERG -June 5, 2009: -- After 10 years of labor and countless dollars, the Dover Fire Department Antique Club is ready to show off its refurbished 1937 American LaFrance truck at the Dover Fire Department's 135th Anniversary Parade on Saturday... Purchased for $8,000 in the 1930s, a fire engine today begins at around $200,000. The antique club paid the town of Dover $1 for the American LaFrance, which was in service until the 1980s... The engine will join the club's other antique fire equipment in the parade, including a hand-pumper dating back to 1812. A previously renovated 1885 Steam Pumping Engine will be on display, which produced water pressure by creating steam, much like a modern day boiler. This was originally drawn by horses Mae, Blossom, Burt and Billy... Older Trucks * USA - L.A. creates incentive to replace they

Torrance,CA,USA -The Daily Breeze -26 June 2008: -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa today will sign into law an ordinance that creates an incentive program to replace older trucks and requires trucking firms to employ drivers, rather than use independent contractors... The Clean Trucks Program requires companies to hire drivers, who are currently independent contractors, as employees by 2012... The law also features the Scrap Truck Buyback Program, under which the city will pay $5,000 for pre-1989 18-wheelers in an effort to have older trucks replaced by cleaner-burning diesel models... The innovations envisioned by the ordinance being signed into law today fall under the Clean Air Action Plan, a joint effort between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach... Last year, the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbor commissions approved a $35 fee on cargo containers, which goes into effect on Oct. 1... The fee is expected to generate $1.6 billion to replace 16,800 trucks in the short-haul fleet. Port officials believe the clean-fuel fleet will decrease emissions by 80 percent over the next five years...

Antiques * Skiing in the 1920s in a Saurer

London,UK -BigLorryBlog -22 May 2008: -- "Up the mountainside in char-a-bancs" was the caption that accompanied this old Motor Transport picture... The bus on the left is clearly a Swiss-built Saurer, but does anyone recognise the other one?... Apparently this 1920s photo was taken at the "new winter sports centre" in Bad Gurnigel, Switzerland. The article went on to explain that the skiing party are leaving the hotel for Mount Gurnigel, for skiing down the mountain...
Check out this odd-looking bloke I spotted sitting in the back of the Saurer. High blood pressure or what?...

The shot ... from * Greece - A magnificent old 1960's Mercedes LP cabover

Still it's nice to see a truck that's arguably OLDER than the load...

Greece -BigLorryBlog (London,UK) -22 June2007: -- The magnificent old 1960's Mercedes LP cabover---they're apparently still in regular use everywhere... "This model obviously stands apart. The driver obviously feared the three-pointed star on the front wasn't impressive enough--so he fixed a Mack Bulldog to the grille too"... The extra four headlamps also add a bit of Ancient Greek 'Bling' as well as the width indicator sticks so the driver knows where the front of the cab is when negotiating tight bends... * USA - Old trucks are cool

Ever been going down the highway and out of nowhere a beautifully restored vintage truck shows up?

USA -Life on the Road/Trucking Blog -15 June 2007: -- Maybe it’s a Mack B-Model, a needle-nose little window Peterbilt, an International “Emeryville” or something that’s a little more rare like a Kenworth Bullnose... So you are probably reading this and scratching your head, maybe you didn’t know that these trucks existed, maybe you don’t care... Fact is, these trucks are part of the trucking industry’s history and heritage, these manufacture’s and the models they built helped move our economy and helped shape the current truck you drive down the road today...
