NEW HYBRID-ELECTRIC TRAILER * USA

* Pennsylvania - Hybrid electric-drive trailer tandem being developed

-- A hybrid electric-drive trailer tandem is being developed by group of engineers who promise substantial fuel savings and fast payback. The device, which for now has no official name, is under road testing and should be ready for the market in mid-2017, according to officials at Hyliion Inc., in Pittsburgh, Pa. ... The system captures energy during braking and as a tractor-trailer runs downhill, and reapplies energy through a drive axle to help the truck launch and accelerate from a standstill and run uphill. Operation is completely autonomous and, except for an on-off switch, the driver has no involvement... The system’s electronic controls read road, terrain and speed conditions and try to keep a vehicle at a desired speed...

ELECTRIC TRUCKMAKERS * USA: Wrightspeed

* California - FedEx’s new electric trucks get a boost from diesel turbines

(Photo: Wrightspeed Back axle)
Silicon Valley,CAL,USA -Wired, by JORDAN GOLSON -30 Sep 2014: -- FedEx runs such a massive operation—it uses more than 47,000 vehicles and nearly 700 aircraft to deliver about 4 million packages every day—that any systemic change it makes to cut down its carbon footprint can have major consequences. That’s why news that it’s using technology developed by a founder of Tesla Motors to make its trucks way more fuel efficient is so exciting, both for its investors and those who want the planet to breathe easy... FedEx is working with Wrightspeed, the Silicon Valley-based company founded and run by Ian Wright, who helped create Tesla in 2003. Wright is still all about electric mobility, but his new company doesn’t make cars. It makes electric powertrains to be dropped into existing vehicles. And it’s sold 25 of them to FedEx for a pilot program... The Wrightspeed conversion takes an existing conventional truck and replaces all the gas-powered parts that make it move. The engine, differential, and transmission are junked. An electric motor is matched to each drive wheel and a battery pack is thrown in to hold the electricity that powers them. The truck—now an electric vehicle—can be plugged in to charge the 39 kilowatt-hour battery, which holds enough juice to take the truck about 30 miles. Regenerative braking helps capture some extra power, but that’s still totally lousy for a vehicle that spends all day driving. So Wrightspeed added an extra ingredient: a diesel-powered turbine to generate electricity while on the road...
(Photo: Wrightspeed converts trucks into EVs with onboard diesel generators)
The turbine is an internal combustion engine, burning diesel fuel. But instead of using the power it creates to pump pistons, it generates electricity. As long as there’s diesel in the tank to power the turbine and create electricity, the truck can keep driving. When the tank is dry, it can be filled at a standard gas station (as long as it has a diesel pump). For the driver, very little changes except for a new instrument panel that shares data about battery charge and generation levels... The system doesn’t eliminate the use of fossil fuels, but Wrightspeed says it can double the energy efficiency of FedEx’s fleet. That’s because the turbine system is especially well suited to delivery trucks...

* Trucks Could Be Next Electric Power Frontier

Washington,DC,USA -National Geographic Daily News, by Ker Than -June 6, 2010: -- Don’t expect to see electric-powered 18-wheelers roaring down the interstate any time soon. What you are more likely to see are smaller highly fuel-efficient utility trucks and buses on neighborhood streets, and lots of them. Analysts project that hundreds of thousands of them will be on our roads within the next five years... A new report by Pike Research, a research marketing firm that focuses on clean technologies, predicts that the global market for hybrid medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses will increase from 9,000 vehicles in 2010 to more than 100,000 vehicles in 2015. This year and next year, mainstream truck brands Navistar and Freightliner will even start to offer medium-duty trucks that run on electric power alone, joining several smaller, new brands that are already on the market... During the five-year period, Pike predicts that more than 300,000 hybrid trucks will be sold worldwide. This would represent a 63 percent year-over-year increase in hybrid truck and bus demand, said report author Dave Hurst... In comparison, the demand for consumer hybrid passenger vehicles such as the Toyota Prius is expected to increase by only about 13 percent year-over-year for the next five years. In the United States, in fact, as the recession hit the car industry overall hard sales of passenger hybrids fell from their 2007 peak of 350,000 sold to just under 300,000 sold last year...

Hybrid Truck Industry * USA - Barriers to Commercialization Still Exist For

Why is the hybrid truck industry still in an early stage, almost 10 years behind the market introduction of passenger hybrids?

Troy,MI,USA -Truckinginfo, by Diana Britton -26 Jan 2010: ... According to The Hybrid Commercial Vehicles Report, published by SupplierBusiness, an IHS Global Insight Company, all the major truck manufacturers and hybrid system developers in the U.S. are on board with the technology... But not enough fleets have adopted the technology to keep costs down and kick commercialization of hybrid technology into full gear. The SupplierBusiness report says that in order to reduce the price premium to an acceptance level, each manufacturer would need sales to range from 5,000 to 8,000 units per year. Currently, fleet sales are in the 500 to 1,000 range per year for each manufacturer... The cost of a hybrid vehicle is a large barrier to market adoption among fleets. For example, commercial vehicles need considerably larger and heavier battery packs to support an electric hybrid solution, and these batteries can represent a considerable upcharge... This is where government funding comes into play.... Strict emissions regulations coupled with government grants have buoyed the U.S. market for Class 6, 7 and 8 trucks, the report says. Kenworth, Peterbilt, Navistar and Freightliner have all introduced Class 8 hybrid models. Prototype tests are underway with major operators such as Wal-Mart... According to Pike Research, fleet sales are expected to reach 830,000 units worldwide in 2015, with hybrids reaching 8 percent of all fleet sales in North America by 2015... Meanwhile, the Hybrid Truck Users Forum estimates a market of about 21,000 hybrid trucks in the U.S. in 2015, growing to about 65,000 in 2020...

* Comment by Kal Gyimesi: Any other ideas out there??

Richmond,VA,USA -Truck 2020. Trascending turbulence -27 Jan 2010: -- Interesting article, but one of the key barriers that this is missing is that the high cost of hybrids (and low cost of fuel) essentially capitalizes the expense of fuel. Not too many accountants will allow Fleets to do that in a large way... Truck OEMs must develop new business models that fix this issue until costs for Hybrid trucks can be leveled out. Business models such as removing the cost of batteries and setting them up as a leased component of the the transaction are being considered. Another model could be to simply sell the truck at the cost of a conventional vehicle and then set up a set of annuity payments to fleets based on their fuel usage. That way they get the benefits of the hybrid truck, pay similar to what they are now from an accounting standpoint and contribute to developing scale...

STUDY * USA - Hybrid trucks gaining ground globally

Boulder,COL,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Nov 18, 2009: -- A new study forecasts a big global spike in hybrid purchases by fleets over the next five to six years, with medium- and heavy-duty trucks along with buses comprising the biggest growth categories... According to consulting firm Pike Research, cumulative sales of hybrid vehicles in the fleet sector should total nearly four million worldwide between 2009 and 2015, with hybrid fleet sales increasing from 300,000 units in 2009... He projected that in North America nearly 10% of buses sold in 2015 will be hybrids. North America will be the leading region in terms of hybrid fleet penetration, with hybrids reaching 8% of all fleet sales in the next five years. Government, university, and utility company fleets will be the biggest purchasers. Asia Pacific will be the leader in terms of unit volumes by that time, reaching 420,000 fleet hybrids sold per year, though the hybrid penetration will be somewhat lower than North America’s... Pike’s projections parallel other forecasts for commercial hybrid vehicle growth. California-based Clean Transportation Technologies and Solutions or “CalStart,” for example, predicts that between 40,000 and 60,000 medium- and heavy-duty hybrid trucks are expected to be on the road in North America by 2015...

Hybrid Trucks * USA - Are Here for the Long (Medium and Short) Haul

An explosion in the number and kind of commercially available hybrid trucks means battery power isn't just for lightweight commuter vehicles anymore

New York, NY,USA -Scientific American, by Christopher Mims -21 April 2009: -- This year, according to the Hybrid Truck Users Forum, manufacturers will sell more than 5,000 hybrid trucks, compared with fewer than 200 just three years ago... Hybrid trucks use 20 to 50 percent less diesel than conventional vehicles do, depending on how they're used, and that adds up: FedEx calculated that its fleet of 170 hybrid–electric trucks has racked up 3.5 million miles (5.6 million kilometers) of service. The 200 hybrid trucks United Parcel Service (UPS) will add to its fleet later this year are expected to save 176,000 gallons (665,000 liters) of fuel per year, which is the equivalent of taking 100 conventional package delivery trucks off the road. Coca-Cola Enterprises is the most avid consumer of hybrid trucks in the U.S., deploying 327 hybrids out of a total fleet of 30,000... As fleet operators buy more hybrid trucks, their prices will come down, he notes. Because hybrid trucks use less diesel, they make fleet operators less vulnerable to swings in the price of fuel... "The model that we've used in the past as fleet operators—to wait and see what the market brings us, and wait and see what the government requires us to do—is frankly not a viable alternative in today's world," FPL's Survant says. "We can't afford to have the lassitude we've had historically.... I think we need an increased sense of urgency."... (Photo: sciam.com)
