NATURAL GAS TRUCKS * USA: "Payback times remain longer"

* Tennessee - Fleets shy away from Nat Gas

--- While sales of Class 8 trucks powered by natural gas remain low, U.S. and Canadian natural gas heavy-duty retail sales overall had a healthy start to 2017, boosted mostly from refuse fleets, transit and school bus operators, according to ACT Research Co ... For 2016, the natural gas share of the Class 8 truck market was estimated at 3% due to higher new-truck sales and lower natural gas penetration, ACT said...

FOOD-FUELED TRUCKS * Australia

* NSW - Grocer first to use food-fuelled trucks

--- A British supermarket has become the first retailer in Europe to use a new type of tank that keeps trucks motoring on fuel made from food waste for 500 miles (800 kilometres), almost twice the current average... The longer driving range - capacity had held back earlier green fuel options - could entice more business to turn to low-emission lorries and thereby help fight global warming... Gas provider CNG Fuels said the upmarket grocery chain had added 10 trucks to its fleet, all powered by renewable biomethane gas, which emits 70 per cent less carbon dioxide than diesel... Developed by Scania and US Agility Fuel Solutions, the system is already used by about 50,000 trucks in the United States. Fjeld said a handful of European companies had already requested quotes from his company... An estimated 88 million tonnes of food is wasted in EU countries every year, costing about 143 billion euros ($A199.6 billion), which activists say could feed the 55 million people living in food poverty in Europe more than nine times over...

ALTERNATIVE FUELS * USA: Mack Trucks' Pinnacle alternative fuel

* NC - Mack Trucks and New York Launch Dimethyl Ether Fuel Test
--- Mack Trucks is reigniting interest in Dimethyl Ether, or DME, a clean-burning alternative to diesel, with a new field test to be conducted in partnership with Oberon Fuels and New York City’s sanitation department... The test, using a Class 8 Mack Pinnacle tractor with a 13-liter engine, began this week and is scheduled to run for several weeks of evaluation, with results to be published by mid-year... It is the first commercial test of a DME-powered Mack. The truck maker, along with its parent company Volvo Trucks, voiced interest in the fuel several years ago, but low diesel prices dampened enthusiasm for alternative fuels and both companies canceled their planned DME engine projects in late 2014... But with growing political and social pressure for cleaner vehicle emissions, alternative fuels are catching on again...

ALTERNATIVE FUELS * Canada - Natural gas: A promise starting to be realized

* Alberta - Here’s how Natural Gas will bring on the demise of diesel. NG has long been touted as a natural replacement for diesel

... The case for switching to LNG is a simple one: It costs less than diesel to use, and it emits fewer gases in the process. When oil prices were higher, the savings that LNG offered over diesel approached 50 per cent, and while that spread has narrowed lately it’s still wide enough to encourage switching... In the long-haul trucking business, where enormous volumes of fuel are consumed in order to produce generally thin operating margins, those savings could make a big difference to a company’s bottom line...

ALTERNATIVE FUEL STUDY * France: LNG

* France - LNG: Fuel of the future?

Paris,France -HCB (UK) -2 Nov 2014: -- There are plenty of reasons to think that LNG has a great future as a transport fuel. But just how great? And how reliable are those forecasts? Cedigaz has crunched the numbers ... “LNG as a fuel will capture a significant market share in the transport sector by 2035,” Cedigaz says. “The greatest potential is seen in road transport.” The use of LNG in land transport will be largely limited to heavy goods vehicles and bus fleets, Cedigaz says. In such applications, it sees that LNG demand will essentially be driven by the price differential between diesel and LNG and that environmental legislation is unlikely to play a major role...  In its base scenario, Cedigaz sees worldwide demand for LNG as a road fuel reaching 45 mta by 2025 and 96 mta by 2035, with China representing around half of this volume... At the end of 2013, China had at least 100,000 LNG-fuelled vehicles and 1,100 refuelling stations in place and thus has a head start over the rest of the world. However, gas price reform may slow further growth. There is potential for LNG to carve out a significant market share in the USA, Europe and the rest of Asia, Cedigaz says...

* California / USA - Gas Prices Hit $4.67, The Governor Steps In
Sacramento,CAL,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Oct 8, 2012: -- If you live in California, you're already accustomed to high gas prices, but to see those prices surge more than $1 per gallon in a week? That's extreme, and Governor Jerry Brown, is now trying to reverse the trend... The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in California currently sits at $4.67... Over the weekend, Governor Brown told the California Air Resources Board to initiate emergency measures to bring down the price of gas. One of those measures involves authorizing California's refineries to switch immediately to winter-blend production...

* California / USA - Study: Charbroiled Burgers Fire Up Diesel Prospects
Riverside,CAL,USA -Wards Auto, by Tom Murphy -Oct. 5, 2012: -- Modern, clean-burning diesel engines have managed to dislodge many Americans’ dark memories of smoky, noisy oil burners from 30 years ago. And yet, diesels remain a small part of the U.S. vehicle fleet... That may change after University of California-Riverside researchers, funded by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, determined commercially cooked hamburgers emit more particulate matter than heavy-duty diesel trucks... An 18-wheeler would have to drive 143 miles (230 km) on the freeway to generate as many particulate emissions as one 1/3-lb. (0.15-kg) flame-broiled hamburger patty...

* German, Japan carmakers tout hydrogen fuel at D.C. summit

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -June 19, 2012: -- German and Japanese automakers expressed optimism Tuesday about the prospects for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as the long-term solution to replacing vehicles that run on oil... At the Washington Fuel Cell Summit in Washington, advocates said the key issue is ensuring enough hydrogen fueling stations, and making sure they serve enough vehicles in a single day... Some stations currently can only fill six vehicles before they need to be refueled. But some stations can get larger tanks that could fuel up to 100 vehicles before needing to refilled... Automakers also must bring costs down for the technology dramatically... By the end of the year there should be eight stations in the Los Angeles area, up from five... By contrast, there are about 180,000 gas stations nationwide...

* New York / USA - Carbon is Key for Getting Algae to Pump Out More Oil

(Photo: Brookhaven researchers Jilian Fan, Changcheng Xu, and Chengshi Yan with cultures of algae that were shown to increase oil production in response to excess carbon)
Upton,N.Y.,USA -Brookhaven Today -June 18, 2012: -- Overturning two long-held misconceptions about oil production in algae, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory show that ramping up the microbes’ overall metabolism by feeding them more carbon increases oil production as the organisms continue to grow. The findings — published online in the journal Plant and Cell Physiology on May 28, 2012 — may point to new ways to turn photosynthetic green algae into tiny “green factories” for producing raw materials for alternative fuels... “We are interested in algae because they grow very quickly and can efficiently convert carbon dioxide into carbon-chain molecules like starch and oils,” said Brookhaven biologist Changcheng Xu, the paper’s lead author. With eight times the energy density of starch, algal oil in particular could be an ideal raw material for making biodiesel and other renewable fuels...

ALTERNATIVE FUELS / LNG * Europe

* Spain - NGVA Europe is developing a network of stations on major LNG

Madrid,Spain -Truck and Business, by Claude Yvens -4 March 2012: -- In long distance transport, liquefied natural gas (LNG) emerges as a viable alternative to diesel. The distribution of this fuel, however, is poorly developed, consisting mainly of a few local initiatives. NGVA Europe, an association whose members include Volvo Trucks, intends to develop a network of LNG stations located in several areas of international transport (called 'blue corridors') and meet the needs of major international carriers...

* Massachusetts - Catalyst boosts biomass petchem output. Chemical engineers increase yields 40%

Amherst,MASS,USA -tce today, Richard Jansen -18 Jan 2012: -- Chemical engineers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, US, have developed a gallium-zeolite catalyst able to boost biomass-based petrochemical yields up to 40%...   Their process was tested using wood as a feedstock, and was shown to increase yields of five key petrochemicals: benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene and propylene. George Huber, who led the research, says that the process “can be economically competitive with crude oil production" ...  The team used a process known as catalytic fast pyrolysis. The feedstock - which Huber says can be wood, agricultural waste or specially grown energy crops – is heated in a reactor until it pyrolyses, decomposing due to the heat, into a vapour. This is exposed to the newly-developed gallium-zeolite catalyst, and is converted into the petrochemical products desired...  According to Huber, the catalyst is relatively cheap to produce, and the entire process takes place in a single reactor. The team has already spun out the technology to a company, which it has called Anellotech, and is in the process of scaling it up to an industrial level...

CHANGE FUEL ALLOWED * Canada - Feds may allow high-sulfur diesel during future fuel shortages

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Truck News -18 Nov 2009: ... The trucking industry was nearly crippled by two fuel shortages in recent years, the first in the winter and spring of 2007 and then a year later by another in Western Canada. At the time, Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), suggested the feds allow on-road truckers to use off-road dyed diesel like locomotives can... The off-road diesel contains more sulfur, however at the time most of the engines on the road were of the pre-EPA2007 variety. Environment Minister of the day John Baird, said his hands were tied because there was no regulatory mechanism in place that allowed him to allow for the use of off-road diesel in on-highway trucks... Yesterday, however, regulatory language was published in the Canada Gazette that will give the Minister of the Environment more flexibility should the need arise again in the future...

Ver mapa más grande

Fort Frances,ONT,Canada -The Fort Frances Times on Line, by Duane Hicks -11 February 2009: -- With the new AbitibiBowater biomass boiler here to be burning more and more wood waste in coming months, Rainy Lake Logistics has begun transporting “hog fuel” to the site—dropping off its first load there Monday morning... Rainy Lake Logistics, a partnership between Northern Bulk (part of the Gardewine Group) and the Rainy Lake Tribal Development Corp., is the primary supplier of transportation services to bring biomass fuel to the boiler... The mill will have three-four days’ worth of biomass on site at all times... Downey noted Gardewine developed a prototype trailer specifically to haul biomass, and that trailer which first arrived here Monday is being tested out for the near future... Marinaro said the AbitibiBowater contract is Rainy Lake Logistics’ first, but added calls for proposal from the Ontario Power Generation and Ministry of Natural Resources could mean more work in the future...
