TOTAL GROUP * France: Introduces natural gas fuel for trucks

* Nantes - 200 New Natural Gas fueling stations in Europe

--- Total yesterday officially inaugurated its first natural gas fueling station in France, in Nantes. Natural gas fuel is an alternative fuel primarily used by trucks and transporters of materials or goods, such as garbage trucks, and passengers, such as buses. Another 15 stations will be opened this year, followed by an additional 10 a year. The aim is to create a network of 110 outlets — either Total or AS24*, the Group affiliate specialized in marketing fuel to truckers and transporters — supplying natural gas fuel in France... Total already has a network of 450 natural gas fueling stations worldwide. The Group markets compressed natural gas (CNG) in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Egypt, Pakistan and now in France. It opened its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling station in 2015, in Belgium, near the port of Antwerp...

IVECO news * Germany - LNG first fueling station

* Baden-Wurtemberg - Iveco, Uniper open LNG fueling station for trucks in Germany


--- The commercial vehicles manufacturer Iveco and the energy company Uniper say they have opened Germany’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling station for trucks in Ulm... According to a joint press release from both companies, the fueling station will be used in particular for endurance tests in trials of innovative engine concepts for long-haul transportation... The companies say that they made this decision because LNG-powered trucks emit substantially less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter and are much quieter in operation than comparable diesel-powered vehicles. Moreover, they add that a tank of refrigerated LNG provides 600 times as much power as normal natural gas, making it possible to use natural-gas-powered trucks for long-haul transportation... Uniper says it has substantial quantities of LNG at its disposal and the requisite capacity at LNG terminals, selling LNG fuel under the LIQVIS brand...

* Quebec - Two move to increase trucking Nat-Gas use


-- A financial services provider and one of the largest natural gas distributors in Quebec have teamed up to facilitate the trucking industry’s adoption of natural gas as a fuel in Eastern Canada... Under the agreement Gaz Métro Transport Solutions (GMTS), a subsidiary of Gaz Métro, fleet operators will work with GMTS for natural gas supply and purchase and, separately, with GE Capital Canada to secure loans or leases for natural gas vehicles (NGVs)... NGVs that are eligible under this agreement use either compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG)... According to GE Capital, transitioning to NGVs can be a critical step for fleet operators in reducing their fuel costs in order to remain competitive... The Blue Road currently includes five locations, including three public stations in Lévis, QC, Cornwall, ON, and Sainte-Julie, QBC. A fourth station to be open in Rivière-du-Loup, QBC over the next months will continue the route towards Gaspesie and the Eastern provinces...

LNG TRUCKS * USA - UPS Freight add 64 liquefied natural gas tractors

* Pennsylvania - UPS to add more LNG trucks to its fleet

-- UPS Freight has recently stated that it will add 64 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tractors to its fleet. Currently, UPS has more than 2,500 natural gas vehicles in its fleet... Based in Harrisburg, Pa., the new LNG tractors will replace older generation diesel-powered trucks. The LNG trucks will be used for less-than-truckload routes. UPS expects the tractors to travel 600 miles per tank... According to a press release, UPS has nearly 5,500 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles worldwide. Vehicles include all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, compressed natural gas (CNG), LNG, propane, biomethane and lightweight fuel-saving composite body vehicles... UPS expects to log more than 350 million miles per year with its alternative fuel vehicles with the added fleet. The company has a goal of reaching 1 billion miles by the end of 2017...

* Canada - TRUCKING INDUSTRY: To face stricter emissions enforcement

Vancouver,BC,CAN -NEWS1130, by Anita Bathe -April 26, 2013: -- More tickets and fines could be in place for heavy duty trucks not up to snuff with emission standards... A new Metro Vancouver study shows 98 per cent of diesel truck emissions in Metro Vancouver and 90 per cent of nitrogen oxide emissions are coming from semis made before 2007... Metro Environment Parks Committee Chair, Heather Deal, says these truck drivers will start to see stricter enforcement of the existing emission guidelines... Although the BC Trucking Association has been pushing to be exempt from Air Care programs, Deal says this study just proves it is needed. She says they’ll be working with the province to come up with more programs to regulate... Deal says it’s not a question of taking them off the road and forcing them to get newer trucks but many of them can be fixed with proper maintenance...

Many shipping companies are switching from petroleum to natural gas, The New York Times reported...  Cummins, a truck engine manufacturer, began shipping new natural gas-powered engines that allow trucks to make longer trips... Natural gas burns cleaner than conventional fuel, which will allow trucks to meet stricter emissions standards, according to the newspaper. It is less expensive than petroleum, and with the shale boom in the U.S., supply chain managers will be less vulnerable to geopolitical disturbances that can impact the cost of oil...

It plans to start production at its first small-scale gas liquefaction plant at Jumping Pound near the route’s halfway point next year... Shell is cooperating with Vancouver-based Westport Innovations Inc. (WPT), the maker of cryogenic fuel tanks and the only currently available 15-liter gas-powered engine suitable for heavy-duty trucks running on LNG...

* DC - Tax Break For Natural Gas Vehicles Blocked In Senate

Washington,DC,USA -Reuters/International Business Times, by Roberta Rampton -March 13, 2012: -- The U.S. Senate Tuesday rejected a bipartisan proposal to provide tax incentives for natural gas vehicles, a plan seen by some as paving the way for reduced dependence on foreign oil but panned by conservative groups as an unnecessary subsidy... The amendment to the Senate's highway bill needed 60 votes to break a filibuster threat, but was rejected in a 51-47 vote... The closely watched vote pitted billionaire T. Boone Pickens, who has been promoting natural gas vehicles since 2008, against Koch Industries, an energy conglomerate that saw the plan as interference in the private sector... Praised by President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., the five-year plan would spur purchases of long-haul trucks and commercial vehicles that can run on cheap and abundant U.S. natural gas. The subsidies would be paid for from fees charged to users of the fuel...

The distribution of this fuel, however, is poorly developed, consisting mainly of a few local initiatives. NGVA Europe, an association whose members include Volvo Trucks, intends to develop a network of LNG stations located in several areas of international transport (called 'blue corridors') and meet the needs of major international carriers...

With clean-trucks plan under way, next step could put thousands of liquefied natural gas trucks on roads

Los Angeles/Long Beach,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Magazine, by BILL MONGELLUZZO -Apr 20, 2009: -- Harbor truckers in Southern California are proving resilient, purchasing more than 3,500 clean-diesel vehicles since the Los Angeles-Long Beach clean-trucks programs were launched last October. The motor carriers now are being asked to do still more by investing in costly trucks powered by liquefied natural gas... Motor carriers by Jan. 1, 2010, must replace about 8,000 aging trucks with new vehicles that meet the ports’ 2007 model-year standards... According to the ports, and the local clean-air agency, clean-diesel fuel is good, but LNG contains fewer toxic pollutants and therefore presents less of a health risk to the local population... Clean Energy Fuels * USA - Awarded LNG supply contract for Los Angeles refuse trucks

CAL,USA -Trading Markets -September 05, 2008: -- The Sanitation Bureau of the City of Los Angeles has awarded Clean Energy Fuels a contract for up to 10 years to supply liquefied natural gas for the city's growing fleet of 340 LNG refuse trucks... The liquefied natural gas (LNG) fleet currently uses approximately 3.5 million gallons of clean-burning LNG fuel each year. Fleet fuel volumes are expected to increase as diesel trucks in the 700 truck fleet continue to be replaced with LNG refuse vehicles...

LIQUID NATURAL GAS * Australia - Trucks should convert to natural gas

Perth,Australia -Transport & Logistic News -22 May 2008: -- Big truck fleets should take the lead and convert from diesel to natural gas, says Perth-based independent petroleum industry analyst Peter Strachan. “With natural gas (methane) less than a quarter of the price of diesel, there are massive savings to be made,” he says... Mr Strachan says Australia is sitting on abundant reserves of natural gas – estimated to be more than 140 trillion cubic feet – which are earning big export dollars in the form of liquid natural gas (LNG)... Western Australia relies heavily on gas for power generation and there are significant plants in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. However, with escalating crude oil prices, there is a clear case for extending the use of gas in motor vehicles, says Mr Strachan... However, methane-based natural gas is cheaper and burns even more cleanly... “Providing natural gas as an alternative fuel choice for cars would require an enormous investment in fuelling infrastructure. However it’s not such a big problem for trucks and buses equipped with long-range tanks and access to fuelling depots, where they can use either compressed natural gas or LNG. The conversion technology is available and some buses and trucks are using LNG in Western Australia"...
