* Oregon/USA - Daimler Trucks will lay off 170 at Western Star factory in Portland

--- Daimler Trucks North America said Monday it will lay off 1,240 workers in the U.S. and Mexico – including 170 at its Western Star factory on Swan Island – amid a downturn in demand for long-haul trucks... The Portland factory will continue to employ 570 and Daimler said it expects to recall laid-off workers once demand improves. It gave no indication, though, of when that will be... The layoffs fall hardest at two sites in North Carolina, where the company is eliminating 800 jobs. Daimler will lay off another 270 in Mexico... Daimler said it forecasts a 15 percent decrease in certain classes of trucks this year after selling 425,000 units in 2015. But it said the company's market share remains strong, growing from 39.4 percent last year to 41.9 percent this year... Employment at Daimler's Western Star plant has been volatile in recent years, rising and falling along with the truck market...

* North Carolina/USA - 800 jobs cut from two local Freightliner plants

--- Daimler Trucks North America will cut another 800 workers from two of its Charlotte-area Freightliner plants as new orders for certain models of its trucks continue to decline... The cuts — 600 at the Mount Holly plant and 200 at the Gastonia Freightliner parts and distribution facility — will be effective on or before July 1, the Portland, Ore.-based company says... All told, 1,240 jobs were eliminated across the DTNA system... The huge Rowan County Freightliner plant and one of its truck plants in Mexico escaped the latest workforce reductions... DTNA says it believes the cuts will be temporary, and those workers whose jobs were eliminated will get first dibs on being recalled...

** Chennai / India - Daimler layoffs will not affect Madras plans

-- The announcement Monday by Daimler Trucks North America of layoffs affecting 1,240 workers will not affect plans to expand the company’s Madras test track, a company spokesman said... David Giroux, Daimler marketing and communications director, said Tuesday that work on expanding the 30-year-old truck research and development facility will go on as planned. Daimler broke ground in March on the $18 million project on 87 acres adjacent to the Madras Airport... Plans include two test-track loops and 31,000 square feet of buildings. The facility is designed to put a semitruck through a lifetime of travel in six months...

* Daimler Trucks to cut more jobs in Brazil

-- Daimler's truck division is to cut a further 2,000 jobs in Brazil on top of the 1,240 cuts in the United States and Mexico which it announced on Tuesday, as it seeks to cope with weak markets in the region... Daimler Trucks Chief Executive Wolfgang Bernhard told an investors conference near Stuttgart the 2,000 jobs will be axed in Brazil at a cost of about 100 million euros ($114 million) in severance payments, raising the number of jobs it has cut in Latin America's biggest economy to almost 5,000 since last year... The division's operating profit margin will slip below last year's 7.3 percent, Bernhard said, which was already below the division's 8 percent target... By comparison, Volkswagen's main trucks division MAN last year reported a profit margin of just 0.7 percent although its currently separate Swedish subsidiary Scania's profitability approached 10 percent...
