DRIVERS SHORTAGE * Canada

* Quebec - More truck drivers needed in

-- Quebec's Trucking Association estimates 52,000 truckers will need to be hired across the province over the next four years... President Marc Cadieux believes the prices of transported goods such as food will increase with fewer trucks on the road. He tells the Journal de Montreal that baby-boomers form the bulk of Quebec truckers, and many have retired or are approaching retirement... Critics say the long hours and low pay make attracting new drivers difficult... The Conference Board of Canada indicates Quebec truck drivers make an average annual salary of 42 thousand 5 hundred dollars, and work 70 hours per week...
