TRUCKING SHUTDOWN * USA: Land Air Express / Crystal Motor Express

* Vermont - Trucker Land Air Express reinstated after shutdown

-- Federal transportation regulators allowed Land Air Express of New England trucks back on the road Thursday, more than a week after shutting the company down for violations related to drug and alcohol testing... Land Air, which operates about 330 trucks, mostly in the Northeast, was told to cease operations on Dec. 29 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The shutdown came after the company failed to address violations uncovered in an inspection in late October... According to agency records, Land Air failed to conduct random alcohol testing at the required rate, or to conduct tests for alcohol or controlled substances after accidents. The company also employed a driver who had tested positive for a controlled substance and a driver who didn't have the proper licenses, the agency said... The company can now operate on a “conditional” basis, meaning it must follow a “heightened, stricter, specified set of safety requirements” and close monitoring by the FMCSA, the agency said...

* Massachusetts - Teamsters file labor charges against New England trucking firm


-- The International Brotherhood of Teamsters union filed unfair labor practices charges against a Massachusetts-based trucking company that shut down Dec. 21, laying off 75 employees, including 40 truck drivers... Teamsters Local 42 in Lynn, Massachusetts filed charges against Crystal Motor Express with the National Labor Relations Board, a spokesperson for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Washington said... Crystal Motor Express, a regional less-than-truckload carrier hauling freight from Maine to Virginia, shut its doors last month, reportedly after losing major shipper accounts...
