* California - Women fill more gaps in the trucking industry
-- Women across the country are part of a growing trend in a traditionally male-dominated industry--they are becoming truck drivers... The trucking industry needs close to 50,000 more drivers, a number expected to grow rapidly in the next several years. The industry is turning to the ladies to pick up the slack... Debra Kaplan has been driving long-haul for several years now and she says that unlike other industries where women tend to make less, everyone in her business starts out the same, and the gap is with truckers with more experience who own their rigs... "They are already grandfathered in and they are going to make $1 to $2. I am coming in at anywhere between $0.39 and $0.50 cents a mile," Kaplan said... Kaplan says there are truckers of all types out there, and that it is a brotherhood where the men do not bother the women, but they are quick to lend a hand if there is a problem...

-- "There’s always a real need for truck drivers to get products to where they need to be, and the pay scale is good. Plus, I love to travel” ... For Nicole Kohlman of Chippewa Falls, a career in truck driving made sense because of the opportunity and travel. For Jennifer Johnson of Clayton, the choice fit in with the lifestyle of her fiancée, who is a trucker... Kohlman and Johnson were among 19 graduates of the Chippewa Valley Technical College Truck Driving program in December 2015. They were among three women in the class, along with Megan Francis of Osseo... Demand for truck drivers remains strong nationwide. In 2014, trucking companies expanded their payrolls by 46,000 jobs, according to the American Trucking Association, and that followed a 24,900 increase in 2013. In 2015, the number of truckers needed but not available was expected to be about 47,000 by the end of the year...
