* USA - NAVISTAR's "OnCommand Connection" analytics system for trucks

* Illinois - Truck maker Navistar says Open Data expands market for analytics service

-- Navistar International Corp.  remote diagnostics system, built to work with its own trucks and buses as well as those of competing manufacturers, shows how using public software interfaces and a mix of internal and external data can open up new revenue streams... The Navistar OnCommand Connection analytics system collects data from Navistar’s own network of sensors on trucks and parts. It also uses open application programming interfaces to tap into vehicle performance and other data generated by 11 telematics companies frequently in use on trucks from Navistar’s competitors. Telematics firm Rand McNally & Co., for example, offers GPS systems for truckers, and Geotab Inc. sells fleet management software. OnCommand Connection can also bring in public data, such as weather and geographic information, said Terry Kline, CIO at Navistar Inc... In the transportation business, where better data can translate into less cost per mile, combining proprietary sensor data with public and third-party data –plus human-generated insights– can create a competitive advantage as well as new opportunities, said Dan DiFilippo, global and U.S. data and analytics leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers... Other vehicle makers, such as Paccar Inc., offer remote diagnostics via sensors and software connected to corporate systems. But most are proprietary and don’t collect data generated by other companies’ vehicles, according to Venkatesh Iyer, a managing director in the automotive practice at Accenture ACN, Paccar did not immediately respond to a request for comment... Indeed, more than half of the 165,000 subscriptions are vehicles from rival truck makers, Mr. Kline said. That gives Navistar an opening for future sales of other products, he said...
