SAVING FUEL * USA: USING BATTERIES
* Nebraska - MidAmerican trucks save fuel using batteries
-- Eight “green” service trucks, working on MidAmerican Energy facilities in Des Moines and Iowa’s Quad-Cities area, use large batteries to power work lights and booms so that their motors can be shut off during service stops... The Des Moines-based company, a division of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said Wednesday that each truck may save between 4 and 8 gallons of fuel per day by not idling its motor, reducing emissions, noise and engine wear... The batteries are plugged in for recharging when the workday ends and also are charged as the trucks are driven. The trucks, painted green, use Jobsite Energy Management Systems manufactured by Altec Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama... MidAmerican fleet manager Brian Knights said the company will add more battery-equipped trucks as it replaces service vehicles...
