* Idaho - Tank fleets see potential in Volvo Adaptive Loading system

... Volvo Trucks North America’s new 6x2 Adaptive Loading system is delivering impressive results. The system is improving fuel efficiency, vehicle handling—especially traction, and tire life... Volvo’s Adaptive Loading technology features a 6x2 liftable forward tractor axle that automatically adjusts to load weight changes and offers 4x2 operation under certain conditions. Like other 6x2 setups, Adaptive Loading improves fuel efficiency compared with traditional 6x4 configurations, which have two drive axles... The non-drive axle, which is in the forward position of the tandem axles, helps distribute load weight without the internal gearing of a drive axle, lowering weight and reducing internal friction. The 6x2 arrangement eliminates 300 pounds from the tractor tare weight... The liftable forward axle and Volvo’s Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) offer additional fuel efficiency benefits. In Adaptive Loading, ECS—based on pre-programmed weight thresholds—automatically lifts the axle in empty or light-loads situations to create a 4x2 configuration with less tire rolling resistance...

** Washington - Kenworth announces 3 new options for its vocational trucks

-- Kenworth has announced three new options for its vocational lineup of trucks, including Allison’s 4700 RDS seven-speed automatic transmission with an optional second “deep reverse” that can be ordered on Kenworth’s T880, T800, W900, and C500. The transmission is part of the Allison rugged duty series... For those operating Kenworth’s T880, the company is now offering a “box bumper” in either steel or aluminum. According to Swihart, the new bumper features a tapered design, which allows for hood pivot clearance and more protection for the grille and headlight area. It is available on both short and standard T880 hoods. The steel bumper – with choice of 1/4- or 3/8-inch thickness – can be painted in either the body or chassis paint color. The chrome bumper comes in 1/4-inch thickness...

*** Tennessee - Delivery van maker to bring 400-plus jobs to Loudon

-- A Michigan-based company that builds delivery trucks for FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service, among others, plans to open a factory in Loudon that would initially employ 400 workers, but could grow to 500 or more, its president said Tuesday... Morgan Olson, LLC, buys basic truck chassis from major automakers such as Freightliner in South Carolina, then puts its own walk-in style aluminum bodies onto those chassis to create a variety of delivery trucks... Ownbey said the company would hire 400 workers "right away," and already has posted many of the jobs on its website. The total could rise to 500 within a few months, and even more later as the operation expands, he said... Morgan Olson signed a new contract with the Postal Service in July to provide it with 6,533 left-hand-drive delivery vehicles...
