TRUCKING INDUSTRY * Australia: Time for governments to step up on national law flaws

* ACT - Opinion by Chief Executive Officer at A.T.A.: Chris Melham

-- It’s given me excellent feedback on the problems operators are facing in different areas and sectors of our industry. A particular recurrent theme was a high level of uncertainty about whether the Heavy Vehicle National Law reform is actually proving to be beneficial to the trucking industry... The Australian Truking Association supported the idea of the national law from day one, because it promised our industry productivity, safety and red tape reduction benefits. We understood that an introductory period would exist, but this was always described as a transitionary stage... But more than two years after the introduction of the national law and regulator, we’re still limping along with:
• No national registration scheme;
• No registered industry codes, apart from transitional codes in South Australia and Victoria; and
• a lack of national consistency across jurisdictions, including problems with access permits, standards, fatigue management and an absence of consistent interpretation and enforcement of heavy vehicle law.

 ... With the Australian road freight task predicted to grow by nearly 50 per cent in the next 15 years, we need governments and jurisdictions to step up to the plate to ensure our industry is able to continue to invest in the freight task and our safety...
