* Delhi - Truckers go on nationwide strike against toll system
-- Truckers today went on indefinite strike in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on the call of the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to protest against the toll system across the region... Transporters went on indefinite strike after talks between the government and AIMTC delegation failed as the truckers’ body said the offer of electronic-toll system by December was not practical... However, essential commodities like milk, vegetables and medicine have been kept off the purview of the strike... Another trucker body AITWA has said that it is not joining the strike... Said Navin, member of AIMTC: “Our demand is that trucks are allowed free and hassle free movement,” he added, with proper system at place, wastage of fuel will be stopped, and delays in transportation of goods will come down...

** Tamil Nadu - Cargo transportation hit in south
-- Cargo movement on road and shipment through V. O. Chidambaranar Port were hit on Thursday as truck operators began their indefinite strike in support of their demands, including suspension of toll collection on highways... In Tirunelveli, cargo transportation was badly hit as more than 90 per cent of the lorries participated in the strike. Of the 4,000-odd lorries in the district, including 114 lorries operated to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, more than 90 per cent struck work demanding the removal of 373 toll plazas and regularisation of toll collection points across the country. Since a good number of lorries that bring farm produces from The Nilgiris and Dindigul districts and also from Bengaluru are participating in the strike, fruit and vegetable prices are likely to go up from Friday... The strike would affect shipping activities and normal work at Tuticorin port. Around 4,000 trucks from various parts of the country normally enter Tuticorin every day, carrying cargo to be shipped through vessels... S. Murugesan, a lorry driver, said that only 10 per cent of the trucks were operated in Tuticorin city...
