* Germany - Daimler lowers profit forecast after first-quarter drop
Stuttgart,Germany -Bloomberg News, by Dorothee Tschampa -April 24, 2013: -- Daimler AG, cut its 2013 profit forecast after first-quarter earnings tumbled more than analysts expected, burdened by weaker Mercedes-Benz sales in China... Earnings before interest and taxes and excluding one-time items will fall this year rather than match 2012’s 8.1 billion euros ($10.6 billion) as previously predicted, the Stuttgart, Germany-based company said in a statement today. Daimler’s first-quarter Ebit plunged 56 percent... Ebit in the first quarter fell to 917 million euros from 2.1 billion euros, said Daimler, which is also the world’s biggest truckmaker. Profit missed the 1.06 billion-euro average of 11 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales fell 3 percent 26.1 billion euros... Truck Ebit dropped 69 percent to 116 million euros as sales fell 5 percent to 7.02 billion euros. Daimler forecast 2013 truck profit to match last year’s level...
* Germany - Redesigned 2013 Mercedes-Benz Unimog debuts

The 2013 Unimog is relatively tame compared to the over-the-top Unimog concept that debuted two years ago. The Unimog concept, which celebrated 60 years of Daimler production of the iconic vehicle, featured radical styling, a fully exposed chassis and oversized wheels... The Unimog is the German automaker's heavy-duty commercial truck that has become somewhat of a legendary vehicle among truck aficionados... The four- and six-cylinder engines have outputs ranging from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Parent Daimler said they "combine low fuel consumption with extremely clean exhausts" ...
* Sweden - Scania's first-quarter profit drops on strong krona
Stockholm,Sweden -DPA/Europe Online, by Lennart Simonsson -23 April 2013: -- Swedish heavy vehicle maker Scania on Tuesday reported a sharp drop in first-quarter net profit, as the strong Swedish krona and price pressures weighed on earnings... The firm, a subsidiary of Germany‘s Volkswagen, said net profit was 1.39 billion kronor (210 million dollars), 22 per cent lower than last year. Sales dipped 4 per cent to 19.3 billion kronor... The group said it delivered 15,555 trucks during the quarter, up 5 per cent compared to the first quarter of last year. Truck deliveries in Europe were down 6 per cent year-on-year... Orders during the quarter rose 28 per cent on the same period in 2012 to 18,236 trucks. Britain and Poland were strong markets in Europe. Bookings also surged in Brazil and Argentina... Scania said it delivered 1,383 buses in the first quarter, flat compared to year-on-year. Order bookings rose 62 per cent...
* Sweden - Volvo posts Q1 loss on steep sales drop
Goteborg,Sweden -AP/Chron -April 25, 2013: -- Swedish truckmaker AB Volvo sank into a first quarter loss as sales slid to a five-year low, the company said Thursday... First quarter sales for the Volvo Group, which includes construction equipment and buses, plummeted 25 percent year-on-year to 58.3 billion kronor ($8.8 billion)... The company ended the quarter with a loss of 248 million kronor ($37 million) compared to a 4.1 billion profit in the first quarter of 2012. Operating profit, meanwhile, tanked 92 percent to 482 million kronor... CEO Olof Persson said the order intake in the first quarter was up 30 percent compared to the last quarter of 2012, but that the second quarter would be a challenge for both Volvo and its suppliers as they change over to new products...
* Sweden - Volvo's Hybrid Trucks are performing well
Goteborg,Sweden -Autoevolution, by Gabriel Brindusescu -23 April 2013: -- Volvo’s hybrid truck customers are giving positive feedback on the newly purchased haulers. They perform like standard diesel ones but consumes less fuel and are less noisy... Since Volvo launched the new FE Hybrid in 2011, 50 trucks have been delivered to customers around Europe, with half of them being used for delivery jobs and half for refuse duties, where they performed excellently... Depending on chassis and driving cycles, the trucks registered a fuel saving between 15 and 20 percent, while some refuse trucks featuring a rechargeable electrified waste compactor managed to cut off fuel consumption by 30 percent... Powered by a 7-liter diesel engine rated at 300 or 340 hp and 1160 or 1300 Nm of torque, the trucks are equipped with an additional 120 kW electric motor. Electricity is drawn from the latest generation of lithium-ion batteries, mounted low on the chassis... Hybrid technology is a long-term investment by Volvo, further plans including lowering the costs and increasing sale volumes to expand. Currently, the Volvo FE Hybrid is available in all Nordic countries to which Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Benelux countries are added...
* Holland - Low deck tractor added to DAF XF range
Eindhoven,The Netherlands,Holland -Transport Engineer, by John Challen -22 April 2013: -- DAF has introduced a variant of the new Euro 6 XF truck as a low-deck tractor, designed for high-volume continental transport operations... The new model has a fifth wheel height of 960mm, enabling operation of semi-trailers with an interior height up to the maximum European three metres – and a load volume up to 100m3... The new XF low-deck tractor unit has air suspension on the rear axle as standard, along with an interesting 'manoeuvring mode'... The rear of the chassis can rise up to 50mm by pushing a button. DAF explains that this reduces the risk of the chassis and semi-trailer touching each other when driving on or off ferries or loading docks... For maximum ground clearance, the truck is fitted with 580mm-high aluminium fuel tanks, with a capacity of up to 1,090 litres, again as standard... It is powered by the 12.9-litre PACCAR MX-13 engine, with ratings of 410bhp, 460bhp and 510bhp. Later this year, the 440bhp version of the new PACCAR MX-11 engine will also become available... The new tractors are available with both a manual or automatic gearbox and have a wheelbase of 3.6 or 3.8m. There is also the choice of Space Cab or Super Space Cab...
* India - Tata Motors' truck market share slumps
Mumbai,Maharashtra,India -Business Standard -24 April 2013: -- Has lost almost 10 percentage points market share since 2009-10 even as other brands have fought tooth and nail to drive away the share... Surging competition has dented the domestic truck and bus market share of Tata Motors, the country’s biggest commercial vehicle manufacturer, pushing this to its lowest level in four years. The Mumbai-based firm has lost almost 10 percentage points in market share since 2009-10, even as other brands have fought hard to wrest share away. VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), the 50:50 joint venture company of Eicher Motors and the Volvo Group, and Hinduja Group flagship company Ashok Leyland, have improved their share during the same period, on the back of new model launches and expansion...
