* USA - World's fastest electric car, the Detroit Electric SP:01

(Photo: The Detroit Electric SP:01, publicly unveiled for the first time)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag -April 20, 2013: -- Detroit Electric clearly isn't coy when it comes to its SP:01, the world's fastest production electric car, publicly revealed for the first time at the Shanghai Auto Show today... The SP:01 tops out at 249 km/h (155 mph) and can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in a fleet 3.7 seconds... The company attributes the car's performance to its power-to-weight ratio: A 201-bhp (150-kW) motor delivers 166 lb.ft (225 Nm) of torque to move the SP:01's trim 2,354 lb (1,068 kg). Detroit Electric has managed to keep the weight down by paying special attention to the battery pack, and using carbon fiber for the F1-like bodywork and aluminum for the platform... With tuned suspension, steering and brakes, the company claims the package offers "class-leading" handling and ride... The car's electric motor allows drivers to accelerate without need of manic gear-shifting, though four gear ratios are offered for those seeking to eke out every drop of performance... Detroit Electric claims that the battery's 37 kWh of storage is good for 190 miles on a single charge. The special home-charging kit will fully charge an empty battery in about 4 hours 20 minutes. The company claims that basically the same battery has seen use in helicopters and submarines. The battery life is assisted by a regenerative system that recovers kinetic energy under braking...

* Japan - Honda "Concept M" MPV

Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by David Szondy -April 20, 2013: -- Honda showcase its “Concept M” Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), which is due to go on sale in China starting next year...

* Japan - Nissan unveils vision for growing auto marketplace

Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag -April 20, 2013: -- Nissan revealed in Shanghai this weekend in the shape of the Friend-ME concept car... The low-slung, four-passenger sedan concept is marked by short overhangs, distinctive boomerang-shaped lighting front and rear, and a V-shaped grille that flows upwards into the heavily sculpted bonnet... The interior incorporates four separate seats and screens visible from each pew that enables speed, navigation and other information normally reserved for the driver to be shared among all the occupants...

* USA - Buick cuts the cord: Riviera plug-in concept offers wireless charging

(Photo: The Buick Riviera concept debuts at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by C.C. Weiss -April 19, 2013: -- The fourth global concept car developed by the Shanghai GM and Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) joint ventures, the Buick Riviera emulates the form of moving water. The concept designed for the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show is powered by a plug-in hybrid system that can be recharged wirelessly. Wireless plug-in vehicle charging isn't entirely novel. In the Buick Riviera, the system is called W-PHEV (wireless plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) and uses a "sensory recharge panel" on the chassis... Other interesting elements of the Riviera exterior include the gullwing doors, wing-like daytime running lights and reimagined waterfall grille. We're guessing the gullwings have no future, but Buick says outright that the light and grille design will influence future production styling. A raked windshield, 14-degree fastback and metallic fiber spoiler give the Riviera what Buick defines generally as a low drag coefficient. Active grille shutters, diffusers and active pneumatic wheels help the Riviera fight skillfully against the momentum-sapping air molecules ahead...

* UK - Rolls-Royce celebrates Alpine rally heritage with bespoke model

Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by C.C. Weiss -April 19, 2013: -- The Rolls-Royce Alpine Trial Centenary Collection will appear alongside Radley's original Silver Ghost at the Shanghai Auto Show, which starts this weekend... As Rolls-Royce tells the tale, its fleet of four 40/50 hp Silver Ghosts tackled the 1,820 hard mountain miles of the 1913 Austrian trial with a deftness that was admired and revered by onlookers. Having developed some insight into the rigors of the Alps the previous year, Rolls-Royce added a new four-speed gearbox with low-gear, fortified the chassis and suspension, and beefed up fuel capacity in preparation for the steep inclines and unforgiving terrain presented by the week long event. Some of the modifications, including the four-speed gearbox, found their way into Rolls' production line, and the company credits the successful event for helping to establish its reputation as an elite auto manufacturer. In fact, the event earned the Silver Ghost a rather prestigious nickname: the best car in the world...

* UK - MG's CS urban SUV concept and MG3 "supermini" showcased in Shanghai

(Photo: MG CS headlights have a multi-faceted ‘shard’ structure which refracts light in various colours)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by Angus MacKenzie -April 21, 2013: -- British auto manufacturer MG (Morris Garages) now under the ownership of China's largest car-maker SAIC, is working to re-establish itself as a competitive marque. To this end, the company rolled-out its latest offerings at the Shanghai Auto Show this weekend including the MG3 hatchback and the MG CS Crossover concept... The new MG3 "supermini" is a 5-door hatchback with its sights on the young, urban market... The MG3 is short at 4 meters long, but should provide enough room for four adults of the six foot variety while making maneuvering in tight urban spaces a little easier. Despite MG’s claims of a “cheeky” design the overall look is homogeneously familiar... Handling and suspension tweaks have been refined on the MG3 over many miles in an effort to provide a sporty yet nimble package. Powering the car is a 103.5 hp version of MG’s 16-valve, 4-cylinder VTi-TECH gas engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox...

* Italy -  Icona's magma-laden Vulcano hybrid sets Shanghai on fire

(Photo: Claudio Lombardi with his team from Italtecnica designed the powertrain while Actua designed the hybrid system)
La Loggia,Turin,Italy -ICONA/Gizmag, by Angus MacKenzie -April 23, 2013: -- After weeks of teasing by boutique Chinese/Italian auto designer Icona, the high performance, hyper-red Vulcano hybrid has finally been unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show. Based on initial images and performance specs, the one-off GT seems to live up to its magma-inspired moniker... Sporting a hybrid configuration, the rear-wheel drive Vulcano H-Turismo uses a front-mounted V12 as its primary motivational force, with electric motors as subsidiary add-ons. The electric motor synchronizes the single clutch for fast gear changes and helps balance out torque for smoother acceleration. Together the two deliver a total power to the rear wheels of 950 horsepower. This translates into a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph), a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.1 seconds and a 0-200 km/h (124 mph) time of 9.2 seconds...

* Germany - Volkswagen's stylized CrossBlue Coupé hybrid

(Photo: The CrossBlue Coupé's hybrid)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by Angus MacKenzie -April 23, 2013: ... Volkswagen unveiling of the CrossBlue Coupé concept at the Shanghai Show, VW clearly has its sights set on impressing the burgeoning Chinese market... The CrossBlue Coupe comes off as stylish and sporty thanks to its low profile, wide track and short overhangs up front. A fast raked rear window, integrated spoiler and 22-inch alloy wheels all work to support the Coupé’s sporty intent... The Coupé hybrid system utilizes VW’s V6 turbocharged direct-injection engine (TSI) and two electric motors, producing a maximum power output of 305 kW (415 hp). With this kind of on demand power, the CrossBlue Coupé can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, with a maximum speed of 236 km/h (147 mph)...

* Japan - Acura brings supercar styling to the SUV segment with the SUV-X concept

(Photo: The Acura SUV-X debuts at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag, by C.C. Weiss -April 22, 2013: -- From the boxy, gas-guzzling full-sized pickups-with-cabins of old, to the new generation of chunky, car-based crossovers, the "utility vehicle" is here to stay. The least auto manufacturers can do in that case is design models that are more visually dynamic than four-wheeled cargo crates or short, bloated station wagons. With the SUV-X concept, Acura attempts to take that next step by blending in some styling derived from its NSX supercar... Acura used sporty styling courtesy of the NSX to give the SUV-X, its first concept to premiere outside of North America, a distinct face. The influence is apparent in the headlamp strips, creased nose and grille design. Thankfully, Acura didn't try to make the hatched rear end look like a six-figure sports car, but it did give it a compelling look courtesy of the muscular rear fenders, angular cuts, center crease and bumper-centered brake light. The car makes a solid first impression and looks good on the way out...

* Germany - Porsche ups the ante with new Panamera S E-Hybrid

Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag -April 22, 2013: -- Making its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show, Porsche's new Panamera S E-Hybrid stood front and center, metaphorically at least, among its Panamera siblings: a now nine-strong lineup, refreshed for 2014. The Panamera S E-Hybrid differentiates itself from its predecessor, the plain 'ol Panamera S Hybrid, with a much-improved battery and electric motor. Performance-wise, the S E-Hybrid is no slouch, hitting 60 mph (97 km/h) from a standstill in 5.2 seconds, and nudging 167 mph (269 km/h) at top speed... Given the development of a new lithium-ion battery, which increases capacity from 1.7 to 9.4 kWh, the insertion of the E into the name seems entirely justified. The electric motor provides 95 hp (71 kW), just better than doubling the previous model's 47 hp. Connected to a 240-V supply, Porsche claims the battery can be fully charged inside 150 minutes...

* Japan - Toyota FT-HT concept makes world premiere

(Photo: Toyota FT-HT Yuejia on show at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show)
Shanghai,SH,China -Gizmag -April 22, 2013: -- Toyota is certainly looking to make an impact at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. The FT-HT Yuejia, a six-seater concept aimed at young Chinese consumers that's making its world premiere at the show... The boldly sculpted FT-HT Yuejia (meaning "happy family") is most notable for its pillarless scissor door design, dramatic sweeping grille, three-part headlight setup and unusual seating configuration, which consists of three rows of two individual seats...
