* DC - U.S. closes investigation on Ford SUVsNHTSA cites drop in rollaway complaints for ending probe

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -March 9, 2013: -- Federal safety investigations have closed a nearly four-year investigation into allegations that 1.56 million Ford SUVs were at risk of rolling away without ordering a recall... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a notice posted Friday that it was closing its investigation into the 2002-05 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer, as well as the 2003-05 Lincoln Aviator, citing the low number of complaints... The failure rate was 4.4 per 100,000 vehicles for a suspected defect involving the automatic transmission parking system, and 3.4 per 100,000 for a suspected defect involving the brake shift interlock system...

* DC - Ford recalling 230,000 minivans for rust

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -March 7, 2013: -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 230,000 minivans because third-row seat latches can rust and fail to relatch... The recall of the 2004-2007 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans is in 20 "salt belt" states, including Michigan, where the vehicles were sold or registered... Ford agreed to recall the vehicles in the face of a 14-month investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration... It includes vehicles equipped with a third-row seat. Ford said it is aware of 80 complaints but no injuries or crashes...


* DC - Subaru recalls 47,419 vehicles in U.S. for remote starter issue

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Mar 7, 2013: -- Subaru is recalling certain Legacy, Outback, Impreza and XV Crosstrek models from the 2010 through 2013 model years due to a remote starter that may allow vehicles to start without the key fob being pressed... A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) puts the number of vehicles potentially affected in the U.S. at 47,419. The Detroit News reports that another 2,819 Subaru vehicles are affected in Canada... The engine could run for up to 15 minutes or it could continue starting and stopping until the battery is depleted or the vehicle runs out of fuel. Should this condition occur in a confined space, such as a garage, there is a risk of asphyxiation as a result of carbon monoxide build-up...


* DC - U.S. safety agency watches Ford vans for rust signs

Detroit,MICH,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit Free Press -May 7, 2013: -- U.S. auto safety regulators are watching about 100,000 Ford and Mercury minivans that were not covered by a recall for rust problems... Ford recalled about 230,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans in March to fix rust that can cause the third-row seats to come loose... The vans from the 2004 through 2007 model years were sold or registered in 20 cold-weather states and Canada where salt is used on roads in the winter... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it's monitoring vans that are outside the salt-belt areas and were not covered by the recall. The agency says it's aware of only one rust complaint from an owner outside the recall areas...


* DC - U.S. opens safety investigations into older Chrysler, Mazda vehicles

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -May 13, 2013: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it is opening new investigations into older Chrysler vehicles that stall after refueling without warning and Mazda cars with doors that fail to properly close... NHTSA said it is investigating 192,076 2006 Chrysler 300C, Dodge Charger and Magnum cars equipped with 5.7L or 6.1L 8-cylinder HEMI engines. NHTSA said it has received 54 complaints of vehicles stalling while driving after refueling at a gas station — of those, 48 reported multiple problems. NHTSA said the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with more than 50 percent received within the past eight months... Separately, NHTSA said it is investigating 39,000 2009 Mazda6 vehicles after reviewing complaints that the door would fail to or not properly latch following attempts to close. NHTSA said in one instance, a passenger door inadvertently opened while the vehicle was in motion. Some reports said some or all three door latch mounting screws were missing...
