* Tennessee - FedEx races past fuel economy goal

Memphis,TENN,USA -The Commercial Appeal, by Wayne Risher -March 6, 2013: -- FedEx Corp. has upped the ante in its drive for greater fuel efficiency and less pollution by its vehicles and planes... The company said Wednesday it’s now shooting for a 30 percent gain in fleet fuel efficiency by 2020, after blowing past the previous goal of a 20 percent increase last year... Driving the improvements at FedEx Express are 360 hybrid-electric and 200 electric delivery vehicles; more than 10,000 fuel-saving Sprinter vans by Mercedes-Benz; nearly 200 light-body Reach vehicles; and rapid conversion of diesel vehicles to more rigorous 2010 EPA standards. The upgrades will save 20 million gallons of fuel this year, the company said...


* DC - Trucking adds 5,600 jobs as payrolls rise; unemployment rate drops to 7.7%

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -8 March 2013: -- The trucking industry added 5,600 jobs in February as U.S. payrolls jumped by 236,000 and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7%, the Labor Department reported Friday... January’s trucking-jobs gain was revised up to 6,500 jobs from a previously reported 5,000, according to the figures from the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics... Total transportation employment, which includes trucking, fell by 1,300 in February, led by a decline of 3,400 in transit and ground passenger transportation... January’s transportation sector employment was revised to a loss of 20,400 jobs, from an originally reported 14,200 downturn...
