* Virginia - US truck tonnage closes 2012 with consecutive gains


Arlington,VA,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Jan 22, 2013: -- US for-hire truck tonnage spiked 2.8% in December, on the heels of a revised 3.9% gain in November... The American Trucking Associations For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index closed out the year recording the best consecutive gains of 2012... However, despite the strong monthly increases, the index was still 2.3% off December 2011 levels, marking the worst year-over-year result since November 2009. For the full year 2012, tonnage was up 2.3% compared to 2011...


* New York - Freight remains in “OK mode”
NY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Jan. 23, 2013: -- Despite a projected falloff in U.S. retail spending due to tax increases contained within the fiscal cliff resolution, truck freight volumes remain in what analysts call “modest” growth territory – though that could change quickly depending on broader economic trends... “Looking at freight, there’s modest growth and still many positive signs; we’re still in ‘OK mode’ for now,” Eric Starks, president of research firm FTR Associates, told Fleet Owner... In particular, he said federal government stimulus funds to help the Northeast continue its recovery from Hurricane Sandy should provide a boost to freight demand through the second quarter this year, while continued improvement in the housing market should help drive demand for trucking-centric goods such as lumber and furniture...

* New York - Converging winter storms could stall travel from Indiana to New England

NY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Deborah Whistler -Jan. 23, 2013: -- Two merging storms have the potential to spread a swath of snow, wintry mix and slippery travel from the Midwest to the East Thursday into Friday, according to various weather reports... The storm scenario is looking colder and slightly farther south than earlier indications, according to Accuweather.com. How much snow falls depends on how quickly two storms come together...  One storm is coming from western Canada (an Alberta Clipper), and the other is a storm from the southern United States... The area spanning I-70 to I-80 in the Midwest to the central Appalachians has the potential for a light to moderate snowfall and the associated travel delays, according to AOL weather. Cities that may be in the path of the snowfall include St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Morgantown, W.Va... According to the National Weather Service Lake Effect snow events will continue through Thursday morning and temperatures will be 15 to 25 degrees below average from the Southern Mid-Atlantic to Northern New England and temperatures will be 15 to 30 degrees below average over the Northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley...
