Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -January 15, 2013: -- Sergio Marchionne says Fiat SpA will end up owning all of Chrysler Group LLC, though he acknowledged that the process may get messy. The Italian automaker already owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler. The rest is owned by an hourly retiree health care trust run by the United Auto Workers — part of the 2009 bailout deal that gave control of the Auburn Hills automaker to Fiat. But Marchionne, who is now CEO of both companies, has long made it clear that he wants the whole thing.Last week, the UAW trust known as a voluntary employees' beneficiary association, or VEBA — took the first step to taking part of its shares in Chrysler public again... That conversion will require its own negotiations between Fiat and the UAW's trust... Last year, Fiat asked a federal judge in Delaware to settle the matter, and the two sides are awaiting a ruling...

Last month the EPA said it would review the mpg on the stickers of both Ford vehicles after Consumer Reports reported the models fell short of 47 miles per gallon in testing... The C-Max hybrid's fuel efficiency was 10 miles per gallon short — it got 37 mpg overall, with 35 mpg city and 38 highway. The Fusion Hybrid, certified for the same 47 mpg, got 39 mpg in testing overall, with 35 mpg city and 41 mpg highway... Ford's President of the Americas, Joe Hinrichs, again defended the company's fuel efficiency claims — both the C-Max and Fusion hybrid get an EPA-certified 47 miles per gallon — by stating the Dearborn automaker followed the rules...

* DC - Feds urge focus on distracted driving
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -January 15, 2013: -- The head of the National Transportation Safety praised automakers for making "tremendous progress" on adding crash-avoidance technology, but urged automakers to do more to reduce in-vehicle distractions... In November, the NTSB urged the U.S. government to mandate costly new safety technologies in all vehicles to help reduce driver distractions... The board wants to require forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems, adaptive cruise control and advanced braking on all new vehicles... The NTSB wants to ban all portable cellphone use — including hands-free calls. No state has followed suit; the only U.S. city to do so, Chapel Hill, N.C., saw its ordinance overturned by a local judge in August... Automakers are showing off a growing number of applications that let drivers do more behind the wheel, including buying movie tickets and updating Facebook...
