* DC - U.S. traffic deaths fall 2% in 2011, but up this year 

 Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -December 10, 2012: -- Traffic deaths fell 1.9 percent in 2011, but are on the upswing in 2012 as Americans are driving more... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that traffic deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, marking the lowest level since 1949 and a 1.9 percent decrease... NHTSA had previously said in its preliminary findings that traffic deaths fell 1.7 percent last year... The final 2011 data shows road deaths have fallen 26 percent since 2005...


* DC - Feds recommend ignition interlocks for DUI offenders 

 Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -December 11, 2012: -- The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday recommended that all U.S. drivers convicted of driving while impaired be required to have "ignition interlocks" installed on their vehicles... The alcohol-ignition interlock is a device preventing vehicle engines from starting until the driver provides a breath sample. The sample is analyzed for alcohol content and, if determined to be lower than prescribed legal limits, will allow the car to start... Currently, only 17 states require interlocks for first-time offenders; the NTSB wants all 50 states to require interlocks for as a condition of first-offense for driving while impaired... The NTSB says alcohol impairment is present in about one-third of all fatal highway accidents. In 2011, alcohol-related road deaths fell 2.5 percent to 9,878, the first time in decades the figure fell below 10,000, according to data released Monday...
