* USA - Pay is still the heart of it

The ongoing truck driver shortage in this country (and it’s not just solely a U.S. problem, either) along with some of the reasons why it exists in the first place, despite national unemployment numbers hovering around 8.2%... The biggest factor, though, remains the pay. Even though average driver pay is now in the neighborhood of $50,000, it’s still not consistent as for most it’s still based on mileage that (no surprise here) fluctuates from week to week. Throw in weeks spent on the road away from family and friends, and it should be no shocker that it’s hard to keep folks behind the wheel of a big rig... Yet don’t think trucking alone is in the paycheck crosshairs. Indeed, according to a recent study by global human resources firm Randstad, U.S. workers are most likely to identify promotions or bonuses as one of the most effective ways to keep them engaged in their jobs – regardless of industry... In the latest Randstad Engagement Index, 36% of workers say bonuses and promotions (which typically come with pay increases, of course) are among the most effective motivations...


* South Africa - Truck drivers gather to stage massive protest in Johannesburg amid labour unrest 

Johannesburg,SA -The Associated Press/The Province, by Rodney Muhumuza -October 2, 2012: -- Thousands of striking truck drivers protested Tuesday amid heavy police presence in central Johannesburg as labour unrest continued across South Africa, leading to fears of renewed violence... The truckers marched to the nearby area of Braamfontein to submit a petition to the transport bargaining council for a 12 per cent pay raise, said the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union, which organized protests around South Africa...

 * Belgium - Drivers protest in Brussels against social dumping

Brussels,Belgium -Truck and Business, by Astrid Huyghe -24 Sept 2012: -- They were more than 500 drivers Monday noon rally in Brussels to show a common front against social dumping in the European transport. Drivers, gathered out of 5 motorway parking located in Flanders and Wallonia before joining together Heysel. The Ubot-FGTB (BTB-ABVV) were represented in numbers, but we also saw trade unionists ACLVB, OGBL ... The reason for the rally? "The Belgian drivers are facing a huge problem," says Frank Moreels, Federal Secretary BTB-ABVV. "Large companies tend to hire drivers who come from Europe Eastern. They roll to ½ or 1/3 of the salary of a Belgian driver. It is unfair competition for small independents" ...
