* Michigan - GM adding 3rd shifts at Canadian plants to meet rising demand

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Melissa Burden -October 5, 2012: -- General Motors Co. will add a third shift on the flex line at its Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario to meet demand of the all-new Chevrolet Impala, which will be released early next year, the automaker said... The company also said it will add a third shift at its St. Catharines powertrain plant to build six-speed, front-wheel drive transmissions and will run one shift of production on the consolidated line at Oshawa through June 2014. That line had been scheduled to shut down by June 2013 and 2,000 workers faced losing their jobs... GM said all of the manufacturing plans are dependent on market demand. It did not provide any detail on timing...
* Michigan - Ford plans to sell old assembly plant, Wixom site

The Dearborn automaker has started the first stage of a massive demolition project at the 317-acre site, which for five years had gone nearly untouched after closing in 2007...

* DC - Honda, Hyundai models investigated for possible defects
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -October 5, 2012: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is opening investigations into rollaway Honda vehicles and shattering panoramic sunroofs on Hyundai Veloster cars... NHTSA is opening a preliminary investigation into 577,100 2003-04 Honda Pilot and Odyssey models with automatic transmissions after the agency received 42 complaints alleging failures of an interlock that allowed 26 vehicles to roll away after the key was removed... The ignition cylinder park-shift interlock is supposed to prevent the key from being removed until the transmission is shifted to park... NHTSA is also investigating about 18,000 2012 Hyundai Veloster cars after getting 11 complaints that the panoramic sunroof shattered or exploded; seven were reported while the car was being driven "typically at highway speeds" ...
* DC - Feds may open Escape inquiry. Regulators are looking into engine complaints about Escape SUVs
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -October 6, 2012: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is considering opening a formal investigation into 1.6 million Ford Escape SUVs for engine problems... The NHTSA said it had agreed to review a request by the North Carolina Consumers Council to open an investigation into alleged electronic throttle body failures resulting in engine stall or surge in 2005-12 Ford Escapes... The petition cites two recent complaints of motorists stalling while driving 2009 Escapes that were diagnosed as having failed throttle bodies... The petition said owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling and engine surging...
* DC - Vehicle Production Group recalling 435 M-1 compressed natural gas vehicles
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -October 5, 2012: -- The Vehicle Production Group, which received $50 million in Energy Department loans, said Friday it is recalling 435 M-1 vehicles that run on compressed natural gas after reports of inadvertent venting of gas... The Allen Park-based startup said it had eight confirmed reports of inadvertent venting of natural gas, four at its assembly plant in Mishawaka, Ind., and four in the field. No injuries or crashes have been reported. A manufacturing defect was blamed for the faulty valve part... Venting natural gas could pose a fire risk...
