* Sweden - Deliveries from Volvo Trucks down by 6% in the first 9 months

Stokholm,Sweden -Volvo Group (PR) -24 Oct 2012: -- In September, deliveries in Europe totalled 3,716 trucks, down 9% compared with the same month in 2011. September deliveries in Western Europe were down by 16%, mainly because many customers are hesitating to make purchasing decisions in the present macroeconomic environment. However, in Eastern Europe truck deliveries increased by 7% to 1,365 trucks in September 2012. Volvo Trucks' strong position, especially on the Russian market, contributed to this upswing... September deliveries in Latin America decreased by 13% to 1,746 vehicles in comparison with September 2011. The reduction is mainly explained by very high deliveries in 2011 before the new Euro 5 emission standards were implemented in 2012... In North America truck deliveries decreased by 32% to 1,844 vehicles in comparison with September last year. The lower delivery pace is mainly related to lower demand in the market... In Asia truck deliveries totalled 847 trucks, 44% less than in September 2011. A market slowdown in parts of the region as well as declining construction activity in China contributed to the decrease...

Among the many victims of Hurricane and then Tropical Storm Sandy are approximately 16 brand new Fisker Karma extended-range hybrids that were parked in Port Newark, New Jersey... An eyewitness told Jalopnik (which like the rest of the Gawker websites, continues to be down after Sandy drowned its data center but is broadcasting temporarily from this site), that the Karma sedans “first submerged in a storm surge and then caught fire, exploded” ... The cause of the fires remains a mystery for now, but we did contact Fisker and will provide an update as soon as we hear back from them... NY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Wendy Leavitt -30 October, 2012: ... At Con-way Truckload in Joplin, MO, for instance, the storm is impacting deliveries in the east. Many companies closed down without really notifying us...  According to the report, about two to three hundred of Con-way's 2,800 drivers are either driving through or stuck in the storm zone...  Schneider National issued a prepared statement this afternoon updating customers and others on the state of its operations. Schneider facilities closed yesterday are being examined today for any storm-related damage...  Freight delivery in the area was halted as of noon Monday; we are now assessing customers’ operational statuses so we can make plans to resume deliveries...  Sandy is also forcing several Triad trucking companies to reroute or delay shipments while seeking temporary rest stops for drivers who are stuck in the Northeast, according to an article in The Business Journal...  Scott Fulton, senior vice president of sales for Epes Transport System, Inc. in Greensboro, NC, told the journal that many company truck drivers who made deliveries up north over the weekend are finding temporary places to park due to closed interstates. In a prepared statement issued yesterday, John White, spokesperson for U.S. Xpress, noted that: "We have spent the last few days preparing by moving equipment from harm's way from Maryland through New England and this mainly entails getting our trailing equipment that could be in flood prone areas to higher ground" ...

The West Virginia Division of Highways (DOH) is currently tackling up to three feet of snow dumped by the super storm system on its roadways, noting that it prepped maintenance crews in all 10 DOH districts ahead of the hurricane by testing plows and other snow equipment while readying chainsaws, generators and mobile messaging boards for deployment... The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said that it has 1,000 crews and contractors working around the clock to deal with flooding, downed trees and snow/ice accumulation in the western portions of the state...

* Italy - Marchionne Wants to Merge with Peugeot and Opel, Outgun VW in Europe

Milan,Italy -Carscoop, by Andrew Tsaousis -October 30, 2012: -- All mainstream European carmakers are, to a higher or lower degree, facing problems due to the debt crisis that’s storming the continent... Ford has started closing down plants, Opel and Peugeot are burning cash each day for the past eight months while they try to figure out how to work on their partnership and, as for Fiat… well, thank God that Chrysler is profitable... According to Bloomberg, the outspoken head of the Fiat Chrysler Group has approached both companies, Opel and Peugeot, again to discuss a possible tie-up...  Marchionne’s proposal is for the French to participate in a new group comprised of Opel and Fiat in exchange for stock in the new entity...  If such a deal did materialize, it would create a mega-group equal to VW in Europe: the three carmakers’ combined sales account for 25 percent of market share, a smidge higher than VW’s 24.8 percent...

São Bernardo do Campo,SP,Brazil -Gizmag, by C.C. Weiss -October 29, 2012: -- Ever wonder what Ford's answer to the Jeep Wrangler would look like? A lot like the Wrangler itself with some Toyota FJ Cruiser thrown in, as it turns out. The Troller TR-X is a rugged 4x4 from Ford Brazil's Design Center created for the São Paulo Motor Show... Brazil has really seen some impressive utility vehicle concepts this year. The Troller TR-X joins previous reveals like the Nissan EXTREM and Volkswagen Taigun... The TR-X was designed to celebrate and communicate its rugged purpose, rather than hiding it in a pretty package a la the Land Rover DC-100. The vehicle's muscular stance, bulging hood and beefy tires convey a sense of utter disdain and impatience for paved drives – this thing is clearly meant to go where major roads don't. The green paint serves to reinforce the car's connection with the untamed wild...

* Germany - Daimler examining cost base in Brazil truck plants

Franfurt,Germany -Reuters, by Christiaan Hetzner -Oct 25 2012: -- A slump in the Brazilian truck market that has proven to be longer and deeper than expected may have lasting effects on Daimler Truck employees at two local production plants in Juiz de Fora and Sao Bernardo do Campo... * Germany - MAN profitability weighed down by ongoing difficult market environment

Munich,Germany -MAN's PR -September 30, 2012: -- The MAN Group was confronted with an ongoing difficult economic environment in the third quarter of 2012. The sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone led to market uncertainty and is clearly holding back economic growth. We are also seeing a downturn in a number of markets outside of Europe...  These developments translate into shrinking order books throughout the sector, including at MAN. This is compounded in the commercial vehicles business by other factors such as the introduction of the Euro V emission standard in Brazil at the beginning of 2012. However, we are now receiving more positive reports from South America at the moment... Against this backdrop, the MAN Group’s order intake fell to €3.5 billion in the third quarter, down 14% on the prior-year level. This is attributable to the Commercial Vehicles business area. Order intake at MAN Truck and Bus declined by 16% in the months of July to September...

Auburn Hill,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -October 30, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co.'s plan to sell or close 15 auto parts operations or plants has come to fruition after seven years... The Dearborn automaker said Monday it plans to sell the last remaining Automotive Components Holding LLC operation — a climate control business in Plymouth Township... The move is a ripple of Ford's spin-off of its parts-making operation as Visteon Corp. in 2000... Ford agreed to take back most of Visteon's North American factories as part of a 2005 bailout and set up a holding company to manage 17 component factories and prepare them for sale or closure... * Michigan / USA - So, Is Jeep Really Moving To China, Or What?

Auburn Hill,MICH,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Oct 29, 2012: ... "In the pre-Fiat days, however, some Jeep models destined for China were built in in Chinese plants" ... That is exactly what the author of the Bloomberg article with the poorly worded headline was going on about. To streamline production during the Great Recession, Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionnehad Jeeps for the Chinese market built in the U.S. ... To meet growing demand, however, Marchionne is now in talks with Guangzhou Automobile Group about the possibility of making some -- or perhaps all -- Chinese-bound Jeeps in China itself...

* Michigan / USA - Chrysler Falls Victim to Internet Fear-Mongering

Auburn Hill,MICH,USA -Wards Auto, Final Inspection, by Aaron Foley -Oct. 26, 2012: ... Bloomberg reported this week that Jeep is considering production in China after a lengthy absence there. What’s lost in translation is a quickly spread miscommunication that Chrysler would end Jeep production here in the States as a result. Anyone with the slightest hint of common sense knows Chrysler wouldn’t take the chance of riling up the American public during election season by announcing they plan to ship Jeep jobs to China. Michigan’s lawmakers on both sides of the aisle would be up in arms, not to mention the difficulty of breaking ties with the UAW here...  That debunking didn’t reach Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, in time, who reportedly told an Ohio crowd the same night as Raineri’s blog that Jeep, “owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China” ...  Not true, governor. The Romney camp has yet to correct itself, so perhaps we’ll have to rely on Snopes...

ALTERNATIVE FUELS * UK

* Fuel created with water and air

Durham,EN,UK -Green Wave, by Natalia Villaveces -25 October 2012: -- It's no secret that gas prices go up every day, and that the impact of fuel left at the ecological footprint irreversible. Therefore, in the world, scientists are trying alternatives. In recent years there have been great discoveries, but research conducted by scientists in the UK based Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS) are quite surprising, since fuel is created with water and air... To achieve this green gasoline, scientists begin by extracting dioxide from the atmosphere and hydrogen from water. These gases are combined in a reactor and then with the aid of the catalyst, the hydrocarbon is converted into methanol, which is then used as fuel, known as MOBIL... This amazing technique was developed in two years and cost about 1.6 million pounds for the first 1.32 gallons of synthetic gasoline. However, Peter Harrison, CEO of Air Fuel Synthesis, ensures that it will not be difficult to achieve mass production, and to produce materials that are accessible and are found in abundance on our planet...

* UK - Air + water = gasoline? Not quite...

Durham,EN,UK -Gizmag, Brian Dodson -October 30, 2012: -- Fuel Synthesis, Ltd. (AFS), a small company in the northern English county of Durham, has recently made headlines for a chemical process that claims to synthesize gasoline from air and water. In essence, AFS is using energy to unburn fuel so that it can be burned as fuel again – a great deal of energy. Sixty kWh of electric energy are used up to store 9 kWh of that energy in a liter of gasoline. When you take into consideration that gasoline vehicles are about 15 percent efficient, a car fueled with synthetic gasoline would use roughly 35 times more energy on a given trip than would an electric vehicle. Not, it would seem, a prescription for a commercially valuable green product... To synthesize sufficient gasoline to supply the world's present consumption would require about half of all energy currently being used by civilization in any form – heating, manufacturing, lighting, transportation, and so on. At present, it's estimated that gasoline consumption represents about 6.5 percent of total world energy consumption. Everything considered, it is hard to imagine any situation in which synthetic gasoline can compete with electric power for transportation. To be sure, there are other needs for portable power in which the large energy density of gasoline may be beneficial, but the net sum of these probably still points to what at best will be a minor niche market for synthetic fuels...
