Volvo has spent 10 million engineering hours in developing the new truck... Ten trucks from the new Volvo FH series will be on show at the upcoming IAA in Hannover later this month (including one that has been crashed into a concrete wall), as well as a range of new components such as the I-Torque driveline and Volvo Trucks' first Euro 6 engine...

* Germany - Daimler to take on Volkswagen's truck challenge

Stuttgart,Germany -MarketWatch, (USA), by Christoph Rauwald -Sept. 17, 2012: -- Daimler AG, the world's largest truck maker by revenue, said it is prepared to take on German archrival Volkswagen AG, who wants to dethrone the market leader by 2020 through close cooperation between its two truck units MAN SE and Scania AB... MAN, which was acquired by Volkswagen last year, has drafted a plan to claim the truck industry's top spot by 2020. Close cooperation with VW's other truck brand, Scania, is the cornerstone of this strategy, the brainchild of VW's influential supervisory board chairman Ferdinand Piech, to benefit from significant cost synergies such as through joint purchasing and development...

There aren't plans to design uniform truck models for the two companies, he added... Despite a weakening global economy, Oestling is aiming for higher sales, the paper reports... The lion's share of additional sales are likely to be in emerging-market economies such as China or India, he added, the paper reports...

* Germany - Daimler to Push More Vertical Integration with Engine-Transmission 'Modules' Next Year

Kassel,Germany -TruckingInfo, by Tom Berg -21 Sept 2012: -- Daimler Trucks intends to push for vertically integrated components in its American Freightliner and Western Star models, and next year will begin offering engine-transmission "modules" that promise greater efficiency for customers. These will link Detroit diesels and automated mechanical transmissions that will deliver up to 7% better fuel economy than existing combinations...  The heavy-duty DT12, a 12-speed ATM based on a Mercedes-Benz product from Germany, will be paired with the DD15 engine next May, the DD13 in November and the DD16 sometime in 2014... Freightliner's Cascadia and other long-haul models will get the options. The DD15 will also use a "captive" turbocharger, but he didn't elaborate on that...  Customers on all other continents in which Daimler competes accept vertically integrated trucks where the original equipment manufacturer makes or controls what's installed...  Detroit diesels have been standard in most Freightliners and Western Stars for some time, while certain Cummins diesels are optional...  Cummins also supplies natural gas engines to Daimler Trucks North America, something that's expected to continue because Daimler does not have its own gas engines for Freightliner or Western Star. Also to continue for some time is the use of Eaton heavy-duty manual transmissions and some AMTs...
