* Belgium - Charging infrastructure allowing to charge plug-in electric vehicles faces battle in Europe to match growth

Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Europe, by Filip Van Mullem -23 Aug 2012: -- An early straw in the wind suggests that there are substantial obstacles that will hamper uptake of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), including standardisation issues and toxic political associations... But evidence suggests that it is economic fundamentals that pose the biggest threat. Spain’s descent into economic turmoil has had a devastating impact on uptake of PEVs, and the risk of contagion for other EU economies hardly inspires confidence... More government support is needed, but the austerity programme has ruled out significant new chunks of cash being thrown at the EV market... Nonetheless, by 2020, a new study from Pike Research expects almost 3 million PEVs to be in use in Europe, which will be serviced by 4.1 million charging stations... Germany, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and Italy are expected to be the biggest customers of EV supply equipment, representing 60% of the total market... All sides are optimistic about the long-term prospects for the PEV sector, but the watchword across the industry is caution...
