* Japan - Toyota poised to take back global ranking

Tokyo,Japan -The Detroit News (USA), by Christine  Tierney -August 4, 2012: -- Toyota Motor Corp. is on track to recapture its No. 1 global ranking after raising its annual sales target Friday to a record 9.76 million cars and trucks. It also reported a big jump in quarterly earnings from a year ago, when Japan was hit by a series of disasters... Japan's auto industry has largely recovered from the devastation caused by last year's record quake and tsunami, underpinned by solid demand in the U.S. and Japanese markets...


* Michigan / USA - GM sells nearly 200K cars in China as July sales rise 15 percent 

Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -August 6, 2012: -- General Motors Co. and its joint ventures said sales in July rose 15.1 percent on a big boost in Wuling sales... GM said it sold 199,503 vehicles in China — its best July in the world's largest auto market — even as its Chevrolet brand sales declined 2.8 percent... Wuling brand vehicles account for nearly half of GM's China sales... Shanghai GM's sales in China rose 5.7 percent to 97,064 vehicles. SAIC-GM-Wuling's sales reached 98,694 vehicles, up 26.6 percent year on year... Buick sales grew 4.8 percent, Wuling sales in China were up 32.7 percent to 94,178 vehicles... The Wuling Baojun 630 sedan had sales of 2,008 vehicles in its first July in the market, about as many Cadillacs as GM sold in all of China... Cadillac sales in July were 2,017 vehicles, including 1,508 SRX vehicles... For the first seven months of 2012, sales by GM and its joint ventures in China were up 11.7 percent to 1.62 million... GM has 11 joint ventures, two wholly owned foreign enterprises and more than 35,000 employees in China... 


* France - GM: Peugeot cost exceeds value 

Paris,France -Bloomberg News/The Detroit News, by Tim Higgins -August 4, 2012: -- General Motors Co., which acquired a 7 percent stake in PSA Peugeot Citroen in March, said it may have to write down its investment as the European auto market heads toward its fifth straight annual sales decline... The amount at which GM is carrying the investment in Paris-based Peugeot exceeded its fair value at June 30, GM said Friday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The Detroit-based automaker said it plans to hold the investment until the value recovers...


* India - Renault constructing 800cc small car

Mumbai,India -Economic Times/The India Times, by Ketan Thakkar -Aug 1, 2012: -- French auto maker Renault is currently working on developing an entry level 800cc small car for its emerging markets like India... This is a global model and will be sold in Europe as, the Towny, under its low-cost Romanian brand Dacia... Codenamed the A-Entry, the new small car will be built at Chennai facility... Renault’s Japanese partner, Nissan, has also announced its plans to launch a small car in India, under its low priced brand, Datsun. We think that the Franco-Japanese consortium will continue to follow the trend of component sharing with this model as well. The Datsun small car is expected to be unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo and might later be launched under the Renault brand name, along with premium features and a slightly tweaked design... Renault is also working on a new 800cc petrol engine codenamed the B4A, to cater to the needs of the Indian market - as per information available the small car is expected to provide a mileage of 20 KMPL...


* Brazil - Renault to increase engine production capacity in Brazil by 25% 

Curitiba,PAR,Brazil -Green Car Congress -3 August 2012: -- Renault’s engine plant in Brazil is to increase capacity by 25% between now and 2013. It is extending surface area by 5,000 square meters to boost output to 400,000 to 500,000 units... The plant, in Curitiba, has already manufactured nearly 2.5 million engines, of which 335,813 in 2011. The site has also exported over 1.2 million powerplants to South American markets... Brazil, the Renault group’s number-two market, is a key pillar in the Group’s international expansion strategy. With the success of Duster and Sandero, Renault reported the biggest increase of any car brand in Brazil in first-half 2012, achieving record market share of 6.8%. Renault is aiming for an 8% share of the market by 2016... 


* Thailand - Mitsubishi recalls newly-debuted Mirages for malfunction

Bangkok,Thailand -Xinhua, by Lu Hui -July 24,2012: -- Thailand's Mitsubishi Motor has started to recall its locally-built Mirage cars which made debut in the market only recently after detecting malfunctioning fuel gauges... The company said 11 Mirages have so far been discovered with malfunctions in the fuel gauges that failed to alert drivers the engine had run out of fuel, but the problem has not caused any accident... The Japan-based automaker issued mails Monday to notify owners of 8,000 sold vehicles of the recall for inspection and parts replacement. Meanwhile, it requires dealers of 2,300 unsold or undelivered vehicles to inspect them before delivery to customers... Other Mirages already exported to Brunei and Japan were not affected by the recall, as the lower quality of gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and alcohol which is commonly used in Thailand, might be the cause of the malfunction in the subcompact model, said Nobuyuki Murahashi, president of Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand)...


* China - Hafei announces that assemble vehicles in Brazil

Harbin,Heilongjiang,China -BusinessCol -2 Aug 2012: -- Hafei Automobile Industry Group Co., assemble vehicles in Brazil... The state car company is partnering with the Brazilian group to build a CN auto assembly plant in the Brazilian city of Linhares, according to the statement by the minister who oversees foreign trade of China... Hafei currently exports the microvans Topic Towner and Brazil that are distributed locally by NC Auto Company...

* Japan - Toyota raises annual sales target to record 9.76M; revenue rebounds 60%

Tokyo,Japan - The Detroit News (USA), by Christine Tierney -August 3, 2012: -- Toyota Motor Corp. is on track to recapture its No. 1 global ranking after raising its annual sales target Friday to a record 9.76 million cars and trucks. It also reported a big jump in quarterly earnings from a year ago, when Japan was hit by a series of disasters... Toyota's net profit for the April-June quarter surged to 290.3 billion yen, or $3.7 billion, from 1.1 billion yen, or $13 million, on a 60 percent rise in revenue...

 * Argentina - Auto market contracts marginally in July

Buenos Aires,CF,Argentine -AutomotiveWorld -August 3, 2012: -- The Argentine automotive industry reported a marginal 0.05% year-on-year decline in sales in July. A total of 72,999 vehicles were sold in the month, down from 73,035 units in the corresponding month a year earlier ...


* Brazil - Industry posts record July sales

Planalto Paulista -SP -Brazil -FENABRE (pr) -August 2, 2012: -- Automotive sales in Brazil reached a second consecutive monthly record in July 2012, aided by tax breaks and lending incentives. According to Brazil's automotive dealers association Fenabrave, sales of cars and light commercial vehicles totaled 351,436 units in July, representing an increase of 3.1% over June, and 22% over the same month last year. The data are from the National Federation of Distribution of Motor Vehicles (Fenabrave) and are relative to 31 days of July, but have not yet been officially released by the entity... The automaker Fiat was the sales leader in the month, with 84,132 units sold. The Italian automaker reached, thus accounting for 23.9% of light commercial vehicles and traded in July. In the first seven months of the year, the company has 272,395 sales, or 22.5% of the total... Second is Volkswagen, with 78,269 units sold in the month (22.3% of sales), third was General Motors, with 59,269 registrations (16.9%), and Ford is placed fourth among the major automakers country, with 29,666 sales (8.4%)...
