* Ohio - EPA wants Navistar to reduce phosphorus dumping. Rules proposed after all life in a nearby stream died last summer

Springfield,OH,USA -Springfield News Sun, by Brandon Smith-Hebson -March 20, 2012: -- Navistar International will have to cut the amount of phosphorus it dumps into a nearby stream by three-fourths under new rules proposed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency... According to a letter from state EPA scientists to Navistar, Moore Run turned white and almost all test specimens died as a result of being exposed to the discharge... The Ohio EPA stressed the new rules aren’t meant to punish for past misdeeds, but rather to protect the stream from future harmful discharges... Barring a rebuttal from residents or Navistar itself, the proposed rules will force the truck maker to more thoroughly treat waste liquid from its paint shop, or store the waste and truck it off-site for processing as a hazardous material...


* Oregon - Daimler Trucks North America Says Truck Fire Probably Caused by Defect in Detroit Diesel Engine

Portland,OR,USA -Recall Cast -16 March 2012:  --  At least one major motor carrier said it had a truck fire related to a defect in Detroit Diesel engines that was the subject of a recent recall, but other fleets using the Detroit engines made by Daimler Trucks North America either didn’t comment or said they had not experienced problems. DTNA is recalling certain  Detroit Diesel EPA07 and EPA10 DD13 engines manufactured from April 22, 2009, through February 1, 2012. These engines were installed as original equipment on various heavy duty truchs and emergency vehicles...
