* UPS buys TNT Express for €5bn
- After years of rumours and a comparatively short offer-period, UPS has agreed to buy TNT Express for €5.16bn/US$6.77bn. The boards of the two companies issued a joint statement outlining the price and the conditions of the sale. The statement also included a report on the position of the dominant shareholder, PostNL, committing it "irrevocably" to the deal. Read more

* The strength of air cargo carriers varies in difficult market

* Hanjin Logistics opens at Schiphol
- Hanjin Logistics Europe B.V. – a subidiary of South Korea’s Hanjin Logistics - has opened a new on-airport base at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Read more

* Wincanton extends WH Smith contract
- Wincanton has signed a three-year extension to a collaborative transport management contract for WH Smith, the high-street retailer. This extension includes an efficiency initiative that aims to cut down on store deliveries without any effect on service levels. Read more

* Damco to serve Syngenta in Asia Pacific
- Damco has signed a three-year contract to serve as the Asia Pacific lead logistics service provider for Syngenta, one of the world's largest agri-businesses, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. Damco will arrange and manage Syngenta's global shipments of raw materials and finished goods from factories throughout Asia, providing end-to-end visibility. Read more

* Panama Canal Authority appoints new Canal Administrator
- The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Jorge Luis Quijano as the new Panama Canal Administrator. Quijano will succeed Alberto Alemán Zubieta, who has been at the helm of the Canal for the past 16 years and whose term will end on September 3, 2012. Read more

* FedEx Express to launch Smith's new all-electric vehicle
- Smith Electric Vehicles (Smith) has unveiled its new Newton Step Van, an all-electric, zero-emission vehicle that features a walk-in body produced by Indiana-based Utilimaster. Read more

* World Courier acquired by AmerisourceBergen
- AmerisourceBergen Corporation announced that it has acquired World Courier Group, a privately held transport and logistics provider for the biopharmaceutical industry, for $520m in cash. The transaction is expected to be completed by July 2012. Read more

* DB Schenker Logistics wins five-year contract with Intersport
- DB Schenker Logistics has signed a five-year agreement with Intersport, a Swedish sports retailing chain. The agreement covers the storage of the whole of Intersport's range for the Swedish market. Read more

* Inchcape Shipping announces expansion plans
- Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) has announced a three year plan to expand its logistics and supply chain business within the Canadian marketplace whilst increasing the scope of its east and west coast (US) marine service business. Read more
