TRUCKS' PRODUCTS WORLDWIDE * Spain - SEMS reduces noise and fuel consumption for refuse trucks
Reducing noise levels by 50%, and drop fuel consumption and emissions of around 5%
Lerida Spain -Control Engineering Europe (UK) -11 November 2010: -- To help it achieve reductions in operating noise, fuel consumption and emissions, Ros Roca, a Spanish producer of refuse trucks, has employed an innovative hydraulic stored energy management system, (SEMS) developed and manufactured by Parker Hannifin... Integrated into the company’s latest Cross rear loading refuse compactors the new stored energy management system enables diesel engines to idle while rubbish is being compacted, reducing noise levels by 50% and enabling vehicles to be used in the city at night and early hours of the morning... The solution developed by Parker is based on its Stored Energy Management System (SEMS) - where energy generated during frequent vehicle braking is captured by a hydraulic accumulator. Stored energy is then released via a specially designed conversion and modulation unit to reduce energy to the precise output levels required by the compacting and packing mechanisms. This is then typically integrated with computerised control, in-cab HMI and conventional ancillary hydraulic components into a system that is easy to install and use. In addition, the accumulator can be charged using an electronically controlled pump, which is attached to a power take-off (PTO) point and that normally operates while the vehicle is in motion to improve efficiency still further... For Ros Roca, this has produced a low-maintenance waste compaction and packing system that is almost silent, complying with the latest European noise regulations, and which has resulted in an average drop in fuel consumption and emissions of around 5%...
* Australia - Allison re-gearing cheaper than OE transmission overhaul
Heatherton,VIC,Australia -Transport Engineer (UK), by Brian Tinham -9 Nov 2010: -- Thiess Services in Australia says it has chosen Allison Transmissions to re-gear a front loader-equipped Volvo refuse truck, in a bid to save money and ensure reliability... Thiess plant manager for New South Wales, Kym Jones, says that it was less expensive to fit a new Allison to its Volvo FM12 than to overhaul the factory-fitted Powertronic transmission... The switch to Allison has also enabled Thiess to extend oil change intervals up to 6,000 hours, compared with the 500 hour intervals required on the truck's original auto box... Jones says that Thiess' experience with Allison automatic transmissions in refuse trucks over many years gave it the confidence to re-gear the Volvo truck...
