TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS WORLDWIDE * Australia - Mercedes-Benz recalls Sprinter vans

Mulgrave,Victoria,Australia -ATN -September 20, 2010: -- Mercedes-Benz is recalling a number of its popular Sprinter vans to replace the headlights after a batch of the vans were fitted with incorrect units... In the recall notice issued Friday September 17, Mercedes-Benz says a number of right hand drive Sprinters, Type 906, left the production line fitted with left hand drive headlights... As a result, the incorrect alignment of the headlights could dazzle oncoming drivers, even with the lights dipped. Mercedes-Benz will replace the headlights with the correct right hand drive-aligned light units at no cost to the owners... * Germany - Daimler reports 65 per cent growth rate - Europe truckmakers profits will rebound in 2010

Hanover,Germany -Reuters -September 23, 2010: -- Europe's truckmakers anticipate profits will rebound faster than expected in 2010, thanks to emerging markets where "enormous" growth rates pushed aside painful memories of the industry's worst ever slump... Global leader Daimler AG celebrated a 65 per cent surge in new vehicle orders for commercial trucks in the first eight months of this year, citing explosive demand in China, Indonesia and Latin America... Daimler Trucks Chief Andreas Renschler told reporters on Tuesday, during a press conference at the biennial IAA truck show in Hanover, he would give a more precise forecast for earnings at his division, which currently expects earnings before interest and tax of around 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion), when Daimler reports third-quarter group figures on October 28... Daimler Trucks has already increased its guidance twice this year from its initial target of about 200 million euros...

* USA - Daimler Sees No Medium-Duty Sales Bubble in North America

Hanover,Germany -Transport Topics -23 Sept 2010: -- There is no sales bubble coming soon for medium-duty trucks in North America, according to Martin Daum, president of Daimler Trucks North America... Daum, interviewed here during the International Commercial Vehicles Motor Show, said, “I don’t see it at the moment” ... He said the recent jump in sales at the heavy end of the medium-duty truck market was mostly the result of fleets that had been buying Class 8 trucks looking to trim their purchase and operating costs by switching to smaller vehicles that can meet their needs... Daum’s comments followed remarks by Hubertus Troska, his counterpart for Daimler’s truck operations in Europe and Latin America, who predicted a sharp increase in sales in his area... Daum said medium-duty sales would pick up as the economic recovery gains strength, but that the United States generally has lagged behind countries such as Brazil and Germany...

* UK - MoD choses Ricardo’s Ocelot vehicle

London,UK -The Financial Times, by Carola Hoyas -September 22 2010:
-- The Ministry of Defence has chosen the Ocelot, an armoured vehicle built by Ricardo of the UK and Force Protection, a US company, to replace the heavily criticised Snatch Land Rover... Though the MoD would not reveal the number of Ocelots it had ordered for its troops in Afghanistan, the two companies’ shares jumped on the news... The first vehicle is expected to be delivered for training next year as part of the £200m package of 200 light patrol vehicles ordered by the MoD... The UK-built Ocelot is highly manoeuvrable, can be quickly repaired and rebuilt in the field and, most critically, protects its passengers from roadside bombs inside a protective pod above a V-shaped armoured spine that deflects a blast away from the vehicle. Its wheels work independently of one another, making an escape on three possible... The MoD estimates the programmes could sustain as many as 750 UK jobs... (Picture: Armour-plated Ocelot)
