Warrenville,ILL,USA -Transport Topics -8 Sept 2010: -- Navistar International Corp. said Wednesday its fiscal third-quarter profit improved on higher military sales and better performance in its core truck segment... The company’s profit rose to $137 million, or $1.83 per share, compared with a loss of $12 million, or 16 cents, a year ago... Revenue for the quarter ended July 31 jumped 29% to $3.22 billion, the company said in a statement. A year ago, its revenue had plunged 37%... Its truck segment had a profit of $227 million, compared with a loss of $28 million a year ago. * Study: North American companies at disadvantage in global market
Detroit,MICH,USA -Fleet Owner -Sep 8, 2010: -- A study by AlixPartners predicts that by 2014, North American OEMs will be losing significant market share around the world due to low-cost competitors... Emerging market countries such as Russia, India and China, will be tough for the North American companies to crack as low-cost commercial vehicle manufacturers in those countries gain share. According to the business advisory firm, current growth and cost trends indicate that about half of the global market will effectively be shut off to North American companies... The report said that emerging market based OEMs now account for two-thirds of global commercial truck production and with European OEMs striking partnerships with these companies around the world, opportunities for North American companies are shrinking. Producers in China, India and Russia are expected to boost output by 50% in the next four years, the study said, due to strong domestic markets and growth in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Central America... According to AlixPartners, North American OEMs are not well positioned to exploit this increasing demand in emerging markets because of a mismatch of product types, a lack of local partners and high costs. In fact, the study finds, even with a growing demand for a so-called “middle segment” of more sophisticated trucks on the horizon in BRIC and other emerging markets, the cost of these vehicles is still 40% to 50% less than the average North American-made truck...

* Colorado - International vows to dominate medium-duty truck market
Denver COL,USA -Truck News (CAN), by James Menzies -Sep 8, 2010: -- International Truck and Engine has launched a seven-stop training tour and pep rally for its sales reps, which it hopes will set the groundwork to launch an all-out assault on the medium-duty truck market... The goal: to achieve 50% market share in the North American medium-duty truck market. Currently, International says it's the market share leader at about 35% (not including school buses, which would push it closer to 46%). The recent series of dealer meetings was dubbed the 2010 Assault on Medium-Duty Boot Camp and by the time it concludes, will have been attended by about 1,000 salespeople from nearly every Canadian and US International dealer... While its medium-duty market share remains strong, Jim Hebe, senior vice-president of North American sales operations with Navistar, said he feels the company has lost its focus on the segment in recent years due to the success of its Class 8 ProStar model. And now he wants to see the company completely dominate the segment of the market where it's strongest... In addition to firing up the salesforce, the Assault on Medium-Duty Boot Camp gave attending sales reps the chance to drive most competitive vehicles as well as International DuraStar and TerraStar trucks... * USA - Kenworth offers spec'ing advice for Canadian heavy haulers. Some good advice and things to consider when spec'ing your next heavy hauler
(Video from YouTube, by piazzatrucking12 -28 July 2009: California to Tennessee. Load: 217' Long x 20' Wide x 15' Tall. 500,000 Total Weight)
Long Beach,CAL,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Sep 6, 2010: -- Heavy haulers that transport loads above 120,000 lbs gross combination weight (GCW) must carefully specify their trucks for both durability and power. An over-spec'd truck may reduce fuel mileage and increase acquisition costs, while an under spec'd truck may not be sufficient move the load, or may increase maintenance costs. The challenge is to achieve the right balance between the truck's job requirement and expected annual mileage to help produce the lowest operating cost per mile... Heavy haulers can choose an engine aftertreatment approach that utilizes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), or an in-cylinder approach through increased EGR... Finally, heavy haul truck operators should look at driver performance-related items to help them gain operational efficiencies... Since heavy haulers often deal with large, oversize loads, look at specifying as much glass area as possible and plenty of mirrors... "Four-way adjustable, cowl-mounted mirrors can be complemented with convex mirrors. The cowl mounting helps because the mirrors are not subjected to countless door slams and stay in adjustment longer than door-mounted types" ... An extended day cab might be the right choice for those heavy haulers that do not need a sleeper, but are still looking for a little extra room in the cab. The spacious Kenworth Extended Day Cab enhances driver comfort with an additional 6 inches of length and 5 inches of cab height compared to Kenworth's traditional day cab. The Extended Day Cab also offers 2 more inches behind the wheel, additional leg room, up to 21 degrees of recline in the driver's seat, and 2 extra cubic feet of storage behind the driver's seat... To enhance truck productivity and the driving experience, consider adding a navigation system like the Kenworth NavPlus, Parlier said. It offers true truck navigation by Garmin, communication, diagnostics, and infotainment technologies. The system, developed on the award-winning Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive software platform, is fully compatible with the Kenworth Electronic Service Analyst (ESA), a computer-base diagnostics tool, which simplifies troubleshooting...
